Shawn Wilkerson & Aaron Fishbone | Charles Hoag & Liz Robinson
Meredith Parmett & Jen Knops | Vilasa Campbell & Jillian Marty (super-novices)
Eight LDU teams made
the journey to Cornell last weekend and five of them reached the elimination
rounds. Once again, the performance was even better than it seems because
novice debaters excelled in the junior varsity division.
In varsity Aaron Fishbone and Shawn Wilkerson continued their strong year
by finishing THIRD in varsity. Shawn was named as the 5th best speaker in
the division and Aaron as the 6th. Mark Douglas and Shane Egizi, both having
successful seasons, had "one of those tournaments" and went 0-6.
An autopsy is scheduled.
In the junior varsity division UVM cleared all four teams entered. Casey Gervais
and Meredith Parmett finished THIRD in junior varsity, while the teams of
Liz Robinson and Charles Hoag tied for FIFTH along with Jen Knops and Abigail
Trebilcock (Abigail is a novice) and Jillian Marty and Vilasa Campbell (both
novices) who all tied for FIFTH. Charles Hoag was named the 2nd best speaker,
Meredith Parmett 5th, Jennifer Knops 6th, Vilasa Campbell 8th, and Casey Gervais
9th.
In the novice division both teams had members at their first tournament and
the other two debaters were at their second tournament. Both teams had good
showings with 2-4 records. Theresa Hill and Adam Gana were at their first
tournament along with second tournament partners Nick Soverel and Jill Witney.
UVM finished second in sweepstakes, while West Point was third and Rochester
first.
Huge thanks to UVM alums Cleopatra Jones and Jethro Hayman for hosting the
LDU squad in their home this weekend, where a jolly time was had by all. Jethro
is now the successful Director at Cornell. Cleopatra prepared an incredible
Kenya-style feast for Saturday night which everyone raved about.
In an unopposed election first year student Jillian Marty was named President of the SGA arm of the LDU. She will be defending LDU's 2001-2002 budget request. Abigail Trebilcock will stay as Treasurer and Secretary.
Aaron Fishbone, Shawn Wilkerson, Jackie Massey, Sarah Snider. Thanks to Steve Woods of William Jewell College for providing local transportation and help this upcoming weekend.
