A balanced performance by eight LDU debate teams brought the University of Vermont the Second Place Sweepstakes award at the Russell Martin Debate Tournament held at Cornell University. Attended by over 23 schools, UVM finished ahead of Cleveland's John Carroll University and just behind Liberty University in the sweepstakes race.
In the Varsity division the performance by UVM teams was very impressive. Sarah Snider and Helen Morgan were 5-1 in the preliminary debates, then defeated the University of Rochester 3-0 in the quarterfinals before losing to John Carroll 0-3 in the semifinal debate. Rae Schwartz and Justin Parmett were 4-2 in the preliminary debates, then defeated Liberty University 2-1 in the quarterfinals before losing to the other John Carroll team 2-1 in the other semifinal debate. Thus, both UVM teams placed THIRD in the varsity division. Helen Morgan, Rae Schwartz, and Sarah Snider were all in the top ten speakers.
In the Novice division, UVM entered 5 teams and 3 of them reached the elimination rounds, including Aaron Fishbone & Peter Winfield, Jonathan Brill & David Poole, and Kenan Osmanovic & Megan Cavanaugh. Fishbone and Winfield won their first elimination round 3-0 over the University of Rochester before losing to eventual tournament champion Topwson University. The other two teams lost their first elimination round.
Two students attended their FIRST DEBATE TOURNAMENT! Troy Goddu and Heather Towne reported they had a great experience and also won 2 out of their 6 debates. Congratulations to Fiona Mahoney & Jordan Clark who just missed the emilination rounds by one-half point, and also to Greta Lockwood & Carla Mirabelli who participated in the tournament.
