8 February 2005| News from Vermont Debate AKA The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and sponsors national competition and community events. The newsletter is published every Tuesday during the school year and infrequently at other times. Alfred C. Snider is the Director. 802-656-0097 voice, 802-238-8345 mobile, 802-656-4275 fax, alfred.snider@uvm.edu email, and http://debate.uvm.edu/ldu.html web site. |
The
Lawrence Debate Union has created the beginnings of an alumni association.
Sparked by volunteer efforts and encouragement from Aaron Fishbone and
Charles Morton, efforts are beginning to take shape and further development
is on the way. The current efforts involve creating a website for LDU alums
to use for networking and to keep each other posted on their lives and
affairs. The address is
http://debate.uvm.edu/ldualumni.htm .
Charles Morton has also created an award for Most Valuable Alumni, with
the winner being flown to the LDU banquet in the spring. Other efforts
include short-term fundraising for students to attend CEDA nationals. More
projects and more long-term fundraising will follow after consolidation
of the alumni list and after cooperation with UVM Advancement has been
finalized.
<==== Aaron Fishbone '02
Here is the message
from Aaron Fishbone:
"My name is Aaron
Fishbone and I graduated from UVM in 2002. It seems so long ago that I
stumbled into the Huber House, a bright eyed freshman, and, lo and behold,
ended up debating for UVM for the next 4 years. Through ups and downs,
wins and losses, and many different groups of compadres and friends, many
of who are among my closest still, I now look back at my time with the
LDU as one of the
monumental experiences of my life. Even after leaving Burlington for Washington
D.C., the two roommates that I had have both been LDU alums.
In Washington I learned the importance of networking; of meeting people
and developing contacts that can lead to friendships, jobs, joint projects,
or new unforeseen paths in life.
After talking for a while, Tuna and I hit
upon this idea: Why not, we thought, combine the fact that we all share our
LDU past, with all that implies, with our knowledge of what it takes to succeed
in that world? LDU alums work in a wide variety of fields, went to all manner
of graduate programs, and live all over the place. This is an incredible network
of intelligent, resourceful people, and the
purpose of this cite is to allow us to interact, reunite long lost friends,
provide a forum for discussions, and provide professional or educational counseling,
job opportunities, or anything else of value to each other, current, and future
LDUers.
In addition, it can,
at some point in the future, serve as a way to develop and fundraise for the
LDU, which is clearly warranted by the current group of eager debaters seeking
to go to CEDA Nats this year.
These are all goals that Tuna and I think
are worth pursuing.
We would
like each of you to please send a bio of yourself, in as much detail as you
would like, including the year you graduated UVM,
graduate degree(s)/school(s) (if any), occupation(s) and where you currently
live, along with a picture, to Tuna (subject heading: bio for alumni site).
Oh, and let's not exclude our many fine coaches! They have been an invaluable
part of our experiences! The plan is to develop a search engine where people
can search by year of graduation, graduate degree, occupation, and geography
to find those whom they might like to solicit advice from or just get in contact
with.
Of course, if any of you have ideas or suggestions on how to enhance or
develop the site please email me (afishbone@gmail.com) and Tuna and let us
know.
Fret not-you will all still get your weekly fix of the Voice of Edwin. This
site is supplemental, and designed to further unite us and
provide any manner of opportunities.
As Tuna mentioned in the Voice two weeks ago, I am currently in Haifa, Israel
developing a national and regional debate program and
developing and conducting human rights training. I sincerely hope that you
all like this idea and get involved, for its success relies entirely upon the
desire of us alums to make it a success.
Salem and Shalom, Aaron Fishbone"
More announcements will be forthcoming.
Nick Landsman-Roos and Jason hitchcock were in Chicago this last weekend debating at the Northwestern tournament. After a bad first day they did much better and finished at 4-4. Some disappointing losses were balanced by some hopeful wins over some strong competition. Justin Morgan Parmett was with the crew. The tournament featured over 140 teams and Harvard defeated Berkeley in the final round. Justin reports that excellent judge adaptation paved the way for a couple of important wins on Sunday.
There are many deserving LDU debaters who would really like to go to CEDA Nationals in March, they have been working hard, but they need your financial support. For $300 you can send a student to CEDA nationals.
Current response to this plea has been excellent: Laura Ellingson 1 ticket, Glenn Ellingson 1 ticket, Paul Kerr 1/2 ticket, Claudia Greenman 1/2 ticket. We hope to hear from more of you.
Send your donation
check, payable to "Lawrence Debate" to 475 Main, UVM, Burlington, VT 05405.
You will get a personal note from the student you sponsor and also a report
after the tournament. All donations will be tax deductible through UVM. We
will also honor donors here in the newsletter.

NEWS AND NOTES OF THE LDU FAMILY
CLAUDIA GREENMAN
[Claud662@aol.com] reports: I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy
reading the LDU web site and receiving updates on friends and colleges from
the debate team. I can't help but smile and feel proud at the success of
my fellow peers and of your current debates (especially my old partner
Edwin!). Please give everyone in Vermont my love and regards!
As for myself...I finished up my Masters in Social Work from Columbia
University back in May and I am currently residing in New Jersey. I am
the Youth Director at a synagogue as well as a swim coach for two different
teams. I was given the responsibility back in September to create, teach,
and implement a new Confirmation Program for high school kids and the
Program has been a success. I currently have almost 60 students and this
job has given me the opportunity to utilize my debate skills and past research
to educate and open the eyes of many "sheltered" teenagers. I often
bring in contemporary and controversial subjects and then have the students
debate the various
sides. Subjects include abortion, death penalty, war and Israel, etc.
I often think of my debate experience and how the power of debate changed my
life and way of thinking. I would feel honored to pay for half the trip ($150)
for one of your debaters to go to CEDA Nationals. I know the positive experience
it had on my life and I would love for someone else to have that opportunity.
Please let me know where to send the check and who to make it out to!!
