Eight LDU teams descended
on the Marist tournament this weekend and emerged with considerable success.
Five of the eight teams reached the elimination rounds, six debaters received
speaker awards, and many debaters in a division above their level of eligibility
had strong showings. The LDU had a 27-27 record for the weekend.
The varsity debaters tried different partnerships as Shawn Wilkerson debated
with Shane Egizi and Aaron Fishbone debated with Anthony Pagan. Both teams
reached the varsity elimination rounds, and both teams triumphed in their
quarterfinal pairings, and then both teams lost split decisions in their semifinal
debates to both finish third in the tournament. Meanwhile, novice and JV debaters
also did well in varsity debate, with novices Jillian Marty and Vilasa Campbell
reaching the quarterfinal round, while at the same time JV debaters Jen Knops
and novice debater Aby Trebilcock also reached the varsity quarterfinal round.
Other varsity teams included JV debaters Meredith Parmett and Casey Gervais
at 3-3 and novice David Moss and JV Duane Compton who finished 2-4.
In Novice debate Claudia Greenman and Wendy O'Connor were 5-1 before losing
in their quarterfinal debate, Meanwhile novice debaters Sanjeev Yadav and
Nat Sillin were 3-3.
LDU debaters winning speaker awards in varsity included Shawn Wilkerson (3rd),
Aaron Fishbone (5th), Jennifer Knops (6th), Anthony Pagan (8th), and Meredith
Parmett (10th) In novice Claudia Greenman was 6th.
Many thanks to Marist Director of Forensics Maxwell Schnurer (LDU alum) for

At America's largest invitational high school debate tournament, held in Atlanta at Emory University, UVM coach Alfred C. Snider was honored twice by Emory for his service to debate. At the Thursday evening banquet naming the governor of Georgia "Georgia Speaker of the Year" Snider was presented with a "Friend of Forensics" plaque for his assistance to the Emory program over the last 25 years. At the Saturday Coaching Luncheon Snider received the prestigious Paul Slappey Award for Promoting Diversity in Debate presented to a coach who brings debate opportunities to new populations. Both handsome awards now reside in the Edwin W. Lawrence room at UVM.
