TWO THIRD PLACES, SIX SPEAKER AWARDS
We even do well when entering in higher divisions

| Jake Meany & Brady Fletcher, 3rd Varsity | Leslie Keller & Megan Harlow, 3rd JV |

| Speaker Awards Winners: Stephanie Kimerer 10th varsity, Emily Sanders 8th varsity, Jake Meany 4th varsity, Nick Landsman-Roos 5th varsity, Jason Hitchcock 9th varsity, Leslie Keller 8th JV |

The overall win-loss records took a beating at Cornell this weekend, but there were still plenty of awards for the aspiring UVM debaters. The entire squad made a decision to enter in higher divisions no matter the eligibility to fast track their training and prepare for regional and national contests to come. The results were impressive. UVM took third place in Varsity (Jake Meany and novice Brady Fletcher) as well as third place in Junior Varsity (two novices, Leslie Keller and Megan Harlow). Six UVM students won speaker awards, with five of the top ten speakers in varsity being UVM students, two of those being JV eligible debaters and one a novice. Even with all novices entered in varsity of JV, and with both novices at their first tournament, UVM took third place in sweepstakes.

Very impressive was the performance of the brand new novice debaters. Matt Jokajtys and Paul Schaefer had a 3-3 record, unheard of for novices beginning in the second semester and performing against students who have been debating since September. Matt Mantone and Bill Ottman had a good start with a 1-5 record but were appreciated by almost all the judges who heard them.

Special thanks must go to Charlie Hoag, alumni coach, and Carlos Varela, new novice coach, for their hard work and dedication. UVM alumni Jethro Hayman and Cleopatra Jones, now in charge of the Cornell program, were fantastic hosts, allowing UVM folks to stay at their house and also arranging for more to stay with Cornell students, such as Sherin Varghese. Thanks also to Craig Murray for his hospitality and help in transportation. Mike McMahan also went along to judge novice debate since his partner Ethan Nelson was ill.
