It isn't anything like
spring in Burlington, Vermont, but the LDU is gearing up for another big
semester. After a weekend with lows down to -19F and highs never getting
into positive numbers the energy is running high at Huber House as the LDU
prepares to kick it off at Cornell.
The Cornell tournament symbolizes the LDU's approach to competition in the
second half of this year -- debate in higher divisions to prepare for the
last two tournaments of the year, novice and JV nationals at Georgetown and
CEDA nationals in San Francisco. For example, at Cornell all returning novice
debaters will be entered in JV, all JV debaters will be entered in open,
and both novice teams attending are brand new recruits going to their first
debate tournament. The tournament also represents new cost cutting measures,
with many of the teams women staying with Cornell female debaters, many bunking
at Cornell director Jethro Hayman's house, and the rest crammed six to a
hotel room at the traditional Ithaca housing spot, the Wonderland Motel.
Director Snider will be tabbing the tournament in exchange for fee reduction.
OPEN DIVISION: Emily Sanders & Stephanie Kimerer, Ethan Nelson & Mike McMahan,
Nick Landsman-Roos & Jason hitchcock, Brady Fletcher & Jake Meany. JV: Megan
Harlow & Leslie Keller, Julia Benjamin & Tarik Yeasir, Chase Whiting & Shane
Clark. NOVICE: Matt Jokajtys & Paul Schaefer, Matt Mantone & Bill Ottman.
Big cheers for the novices, who joined on Monday night and immediately wanted
to go to a debate tournament.
DEPARTURE: 7 AM FROM HUBER HOUSE, YOU NEED TO BE ON TIME!
BRING SLEEPING BAG, PILLOW AND TOWEL.

There are many deserving LDU debaters who would really like to go to CEDA Nationals in March, they have been working hard, but they need your financial support. For $300 you can send a student to CEDA nationals.
Send your donation check, payable to "Lawrence Debate" to 475 Main, UVM, Burlington, VT 05405. You will get a personal note from the student you sponsor and also a report after the tournament. All donations will be tax deductible through UVM. We will also honor donors here in the newsletter.
Graduating senior Carlos Varela has come back to the LDU as a coach. His honors thesis is about teaching people to debate environmental issues, and he plans to work with the LDU, especially younger debaters, to turn his thesis into an action project. Carlos was a very successful debater for the LDU before taking a leave of absence to focus on academics. Carlos will attend four tournaments and judge novice debates, work with new debaters, hold regular office hours and keep track of round report forms and the LDU's argument lists.
Carlos has won several tournaments for the LDU and was the top novice speaker in the East. He has represented the LDU in international debates in Spanish. He is from Puerto Rico and plans a career in law.
Thanks a lot to Carlos for helping us just when our squad has become so large!

NEWS AND NOTES OF THE LDU FAMILY
Laura and Glenn Ellingson are excited about hosting LDU folks who come to CEDA nationals in San Francisco, as they live very near there. Abigail Trebilcock has volunteered to judge eight rounds at the tournament to save money. We hope that Teresa Hill will be able to come up from LA, and that the ever-so-suave Mike Calore (DJ Snackfight) will be along with us as well. The LDU has quite the west coast posse!
Aaron Fishbone is
leaving next week for Palestine where he will be working with Palestinian
youth on debate training. Nice work Aaron! We hope to get a report on
his return. Aaron also is working on alumni issues and will have news for
the next newsletter.
