SUCCESS IN TEXAS -- NOW BACK TO NEW ENGLAND

Four LDU teams went to two tournaments in Texas after the new year and before school started. All entered in the varsity division. Teams included Jason Hitchcock & Nick Landsman-Roos, Leslie Keller and Megan Harlow, Brady Fletcher and Stephanie Kimerer, and Shane Clark and Chase Whiting. Coaches included Tuna Snider, Helen Morgan Parmett, Justin Morgan Parmett, and also alumnae Jillian Marty.

At the first tournament, University of North Texas, Nick and Jason reached the elimination rounds where they defeated Baylor 3-0 before falling to eventual tournament champion Missouri-Kansas City 3-0. Nick was the fifteenth speaker. Leslie and Megan along with brady and Stephanie were 3-4, losing their last (and break round). Chase and Shane had a tough tournament and were 1-6.

At the second tournament, University of Texas at Dallas, Nick and Jason again reached the elimination rounds where they defeated Wichita State 3-0, before losing to Michigan State in the next elimination round. Nick was the tenth speaker. Chase and Shane bounced back and were 3-4, while the other two teams were both 2-5.

Overall it was a good trip, with Nick and Jason winning elimination rounds and speaker awards at national level tournaments. The other three teams did very well for JV teams entering in varsity, and the strong competition was useful for their development. This sets the stage for the next phase of the season, three regional tournaments, with the last one including the qualifying tournament for the NDT, where all four teams will try to qualify to attend the NDT to be held at Northwestern in Chicago. Last year Nick and Jason won the District 8 qualifying tournament. After that three of these teams will attend JV Nationals at West Virginia University in an attempt to win the JV national championship for an unprecedented fourth year in a row.

"Our arguments and strategies are working well," noted Snider, "and the higher level of competition is helping our younger debaters grow quickly into seasoned veterans. I like our chances. "

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN TOURNAMENT CANCELLED DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS

LDU BEGINS THREE YEAR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

In cooperation with the UVM Development Office the LDU has begun a major fundraising campaign to provide sufficient funds for the larger squad and secure funding far into the future. Thanks to alums Chuck Morton and Aaron Fishbone for their help, and also to current debater Leslie Keller. A larger database of alumni is being assembled and an integrated plan is already working. The theme is to salute coaches past and present, with the target being the 25th year since Robert Huber retired and the 25th year since coach Snider arrived. The salute involves helping students now and increasing the endowment created by Edwin Lawrence. The plan contains the following elements:
1. An active effort to solicit short term donations to help finance CEDA Nationals and hopefully two teams to the NDT.
2. A mailing to all alumni with addresses for a medium term fundraising attempt for next year and to expand the endowment.
3. Gathering names from alumni already on our list to expand the list. Also an attempt to gather addresses of parents.
4. A calling network of alumni to contact each other to solicit donations.
5. Events to be hosted in major cities.
6. Individual meetings with alumni in a position to make major major gifts to expand the endowment.
7. A doubling of the endowment.

Watch for information coming your way soon!

Donations for this year's national tournaments gladly accepted!

LARGE CONTINGENT BOUND FOR BARD

The LDU has a large contingent bound for Bard College this weekend, especially in the varsity division. Bard College is a new debate program, just a few years old, and this will be their first tournament hosting experience. While not all LDU debaters are ready (or have partners yet) the contingent is substantial. Especially notable is the fact that six teams will be entering the varsity division, with most of these teams being junior varsity debaters who have a lot of ambition.

Varsity teams will be Hitchcock-Landsman-Roos, McMahan, Harlow-Keller, Fletcher-Kimerer, Clark-Whiting and Wilson-Sharma. The JV contingent will be Benjamin-Goldschneider. Novice teams will be Backus-Bates and Thibault-Brown. Coaches/judges will include Snider, H & J Morgan Parmett, Knops, Reimer, and hopefully Lockwood.

Van 1 leaves at Noon: Kimerer, Benjamin, Harlow, Goldschneider, Fletcher, J & H & N Morgan Parmett, McMahan.
Van 2 leaves at 3 PM: Keller, Landsman-Roos, Whiting, Clark, Backus, Brown, Sharma, Wilson, Hitchcock, Bates.
Van 3 leaves at 5 PM: Nelson, Snider, Lockwood, Thibault, Knops.

ALUMNI NEWS

Lisa Heller-Boragine lheller@capecod.edu
I've had a few requests for info and updates about the pregnancy, so please forgive my indulgence as I wax poetic (or not so poetic) about the baby-to-be ... really, I'm not obsessed. No, I'm not. I don't spend all my time on pregnant chat rooms online. Okay, maybe just a little of my tim e....
While I'm confessing: Oh my God, I've turned into the typical PREGNANT WOMAN! Among the other things that fall into the "I-swore-I'd-never-that-but-here-I-am-doing-them" includes:
* the current obsession with reading and re-reading about the stages of labor, baby care products, you name it. My Grandmother Fern said to me the other day, "You're going to be so well informed that you'll be confused."
* I'm becoming irrationally concerned because everything has gone too smoothly this pregnancy - I've been feeling fine, no high blood pressure, no diabetes, so of course THE BABY WILL BE BORN WITH FOUR HEADS! (Although, lately this feeling has subsided and been replaced by extremely bizarre dreams about space travel, and political debates between creatures in cat-land.)
* I've turned into a (gasp) planner... yes, me, the quintessential procrastinator. I've still got six weeks to go, and my bag is already packed for the hospital. This is the same person who finished her debate affirmative case in college on the bus on the way to the tournament. Or who just a few weeks ago, turned in my semester final grades 3 hours *after* they were due.  Chicken little, the sky is falling, what is the world coming to!?
* There are more pillows on my bed at the moment than days in the week. Man, it's hard to sleep with this not-so-washboard-stomach.
The good news? The baby continues to have excellent taste in music. Reggae and Vocal Music top the list for kicks per minute. And, she seems to have turned, and is no longer a breech! So I can continue to fantasize that I will actually have a drug free natural birth...
On a final note: a few people have been asking, so yes, I have a baby registry. I'm registered under Lisa Boragine at <http://babiesrus.com>babiesrus.com.
But, there are lots of things to spend money on in life, so don't feel obligated in any way, shape or form to spend money. This little girl of ours seems she will be well provided for. Among the items I've gotten from my students at the college include a high chair, a rocking chair, two strollers and a car seat. I have even had one student knit me an afghan!
They probably feel sorry for me. Either that or terrified that I'm going to step on them... :)
Well, that's it for now, I'm still incubatin'.
