The Lawrence Debate
Union is preparing for a big second semester of competition, and it all happens
in eight weeks of time. The semester will feature competition at tournaments
like Marist College, Cornell University, the University of Kansas, Boston
College, Towson University, CEDA Nationals in Tennessee, and hopefully the
National Debate Tournament at Baylor University in Texas.
The first semester registered very positively in terms of recruitment, retention,
and performance. Now there are 12 formed debate teams committed to travel
competition in semester two.
While slightly behind last year's pace for wins and debates, a new record
for both is still within reach, given that there are so many teams actively
debating. At the midpoint of semester one Vermont was in the 40s of the national
rankings, but zoomed to 18th after strong performances late in the semester.
Optimism expert Jackie Massey is predicting a top ten finish for UVM. We shall
see.
Teams are forming now, and here are the pairings:
Aaron Fishbone & Shawn Wilkerson - will debate varsity this semester.
Anthony Pagan & Shane Egizi - will debate varsity most of the semester
and aim to do well at JV Nationals in Towson.
Meredith Parmett & Casey Gervais - will debate varsity and JV.
Jillian Marty & Vilasa Campbell - will debate JV before dropping back
to novice for Novice Nationals.
Lisbeth Robinson & Charles Hoag - will debate JV this semester, Lisbeth
is a senior.
David Moss & Duane Compton - will debate JV even though David is a novice.
Sanjeev Yadav & Nat Sillin - have increased their commitment to debate
and will start our in novice.
Steph McDonald & Matt Sweeney - will debate JV starting at Cornell.
Adam Gana & Jill Witney - will debate novice, with Adam being a courageous
rookie.
Wendy O'Connor & Claudia Greenman - will debate novice after success in
the first semester.
STILL WITHOUT PARTNERS: Jen Knops, Abagail Trebilcock, Nick Soverel, Sarah
Burnie.
