LDU OUTREACH TO CHILE A HUGE SUCCESS

| Workshop for high school students at Universidad Diego Portales | With winning 10-11 year-old team at rural semifinals in Melapilla |

| Mapuche woman is top speaker at high school nationals | Debate across the curriculum teacher workshop in Santiago |

| Audience at university national final in great hall of the legislature | Winning team from Universidad Las Republica |

A week long trip by LDU coach Alfred Snider to Chile was a huge success. A complete journal with extensive photos can be seen at http://debate.uvm.edu/travel/chile02/chileinto.html . For those of you interested in the day to day activities, this itinerary might help you look through the journal:

11/22-23 Travel to and arrival in Santiago
11/24 Sightseeing in Santiago and preparation meetings for the rest of the events
11/25 National University Championship, COBA reception, COBA banquet
11-26 Workshops with high school students and high school teachers at Universidad Diego Portales
11-27 Judging seminar in the AM, Master class for debaters in the PM, at Instituto Chileano Noreteamericano sponsored by COBA
11-28 Trip to Milapilla to watch the semifinals of regional tournament for 10-11 year olds, meeting at UDP on future projects
11-29 Return and ending thoughts

The trip was sponsored by COBA (Corporacion Cultural de lo Barnechea) and Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago. No LDU funds were used for this trip. Special thanks go to Drina Rendic of COBA, as well as Manuel Montt Balmeceda, Jose Galleon Leon, Roberto Vega, Benito Escobar, Francisco Mas, Paola Bernales, and many others at Universidad Diego Portales. As always, thanks to Rodrigo Rojas for getting the ball rolling.

In the early 1980's on a topic about USA foreign aid and human rights our most popular affirmative case was that no funds should go to Pinochet's Chile until indigenous Mapuche people there were granted basic human rights. Now, 20 years later, a young Mapuche woman is the top high school debater in Chile and her team won the national championship. VENEZUELA TRIP CANCELED

LDU coach Snider's upcoming trip to Venezuela to work with their rapidly expanding debating activities was canceled due to civil unrest in the Latin American nation. A nationwide strike against President Chavez had been called for Monday and on Tuesday it turned violent. It was at this time that the coordinator of the trip, Luis Manuel de Llano, decided that the visit would be better at a different time. In an email, Luis had said, "Tuna, the political situation has escalated to the level of violence and expectation is that it will escalate even further. Consequently, we have decided to cancel the training for the safety of all participants. We will wait for a better moment to do this training." It is hoped that the trip can be rescheduled.

The trip involved assisting in the organization of debate outreach into disadvantaged schools, cooperative fund raising, and instruction for university debaters at several major universities. The trip was sponsored by Proctor & Gamble, Television Eleven, and Universidad Catolico Andres Bello.

Snider's reaction was predictable, "I would like to go, especially if there is strife. Debate is needed most where the tools of peaceful disagreement are absent. However, I understand the superior local knowledge of my hosts and I will be proud to come to Venezuela whenever they indicate it would be best." Stay tuned to this newsletter for breaking news.
