The Lawrence Debate Union used a weekend without a debate tournament to bring more discourse, discussion and debate to the airwaves as they taped three episodes of the long-running LDU television show, Flashpoint. They were joined by dynamic speaker and debater Mila Turajlic from the Yugoslav University Debate Network. Mila, an international and European debate star, is in NYC for a media internship and accepted the LDU's invitation to come to Burlington to participate in Flashpoint. Mila's first contact with LDU came several years ago when Prof. Snider visited the University of Belgrade to support debate activities there. Since then she has become very active in the Network as well as in the Yugoslavian Democratic Resistance, participating in many public debates in her country while Milosevic still was in power as well as in many international competitions.
Flashpoint #221 was
entitled "Electile Dysfunction" and discussed the issues surrounding
the deadlocked presidential campaign in the USA. The panel consisted of Sarah
Snider, Anthony Pagan, Shane Egizi, and Greta Lockwood with moderator Alfred
Flashpoint #222 was entitled "Stop the Shop" and discussed issues surrounding consumerism and the protest action involved in "Buy Nothing Day, November 25, 2000" which was carried forward in over 30 countries. The panel consisted of Greta Lockwood. Shane Egizi and moderator Alfred Snider.
Flashpoint #223 was entitled "NATO Bombing of Yugoslavia" and discussed issues surrounding the NATO air war against Yugoslavia during the crisis and intervention in Kosovo. The panel consisted of Mila Turajlic, Greta Lockwood, Shane Egizi and moderator Alfred Snider. The issue has long been an important one for LDU members, who actively opposed the bombing, participated in civil disobedience to protest the bombing of Yugoslavian civilian targets, and staged a massively attended public debate (400+ people) on US intervention. Mila provided an inside perspective and information about the effects and realities of the air campaign. One of the best shows in recent memory
Greta Lockwood is the topic coordinator for Flashpoint, Karen McGregor of Adelphia is the Director. It is seen in Burlington three times a week on Channel 15, Wed. 12:30 PM, Thursday 10:30 PM, and Saturday 1 PM. Many archived Flashpoint shows can be viewed as streaming media at http://debate.uvm.edu/watchdiscussion.html.
