ROAD TRIP TO NATION'S CAPITAL
Lessons of "Debating Up"

| TIRED STUDENTS BACK IN VERMONT AFTER A LONG DRIVE|

Three teams made the long drive to the nation's capital last weekend to attend the Cap City Debates held at the Catholic University of America. An excellent tournament featuring over 70 teams from all over the nation, the LDU was seeking a challenge and a chance to learn. They got that and more. Five of the six student debaters are junior varsity eligible and were novice debaters last year, so it was a good chance to debate different but better competition than they face closer to home.
Chase Whiting and Shane Clark posted a 3-3 record, while Megan Harlow and Brady Fletcher along with Stephanie Kimerer and Colin Kern were 2-4. All teams reported very close debate in each and every round, even if the record was 7-11. "Shane and Chase had a little advantage because they are regular partners, while the other four were experimenting with their partnerships. I was pleased at how they debated and they tried very hard. They would have been very successful in the JV division, but I was pleased at their choice," said LDU coach Snider.
The trip was made possible and enjoyable through the support and assistance of LDU alums and friends. Aaron Fishbone and Eric Mates judged for the team, while Carlos Varela (now program director of the DC Urban Debate League) was there in support an as a cheerleader, as were Lindsey Melander along with long-time LDU supporters Sallie Chafer and Tracy Gonos. Carlos' cheery nature pepped things up and Sallie was there with a chocolate angel food cake topped off with Bailey's Irish Cream chocolate frosting. LDU alums Paul Kerr, now with the Arms Control Association, was also there to provide advice on one of our disadvantages he has been researching for the ACA.
Lindsey and Aaron have been very helpful in fundraising both last year and this year.
