UVM sent Aaron Fishbone
and Shawn Wilkerson to the Harvard University tournament last weekend, one
of the most difficult tournaments of the year, and they came home disappointed
with a 3-5 record. Wins over Boston College, Cornell, and George Mason were
counterbalanced by losses to Northwestern, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Rochester,
Debater Fishbone reported that they often debated at the level of the opponent, debating less well against less challenging opponents. Coach Massey reported that last rebuttals cost rounds on both sides of the topic, but that the evidence and arguments were fine.
The experience has prompted some new ideas for both sides of the topic to address these issues, to be revealed during meetings this week.
Eighty novice teams attended a tournament held at the Bronx High School of Science this weekend in NYC. Sponsored by the New York Urban Debate League in partnership with the Open Society Institute, the IMPACT Coalition, the Lawrence Debate Union, and the Mid-Hudson Debate League, it was the largest such tournament ever held in the Big Apple. The LDU has been an active consultant with this program since it began in 1997. Many talented students at the tournament indicated their interest in applying to UVM, especially among the varsity debaters who were there in the capacity of judges. LDU Coach Snider managed to run the Control Room at the tournament on 10/28 without anyone discovering it was his birthday. For more information go to http://debate.uvm.edu/udl/.
The First National
Debate Championship of South Korea will be held on December 19-23, 2000 and
will be sponsored by Kyung-Hee University [LDU's South Korean partner] as
well as the Prime Minister of South Korea and the Mayor of Seoul. LDU Coach
Snider has been invited to be the keynote speaker at the event as their guest
and has also been asked to put on several debating workshops during his visit.
South Korean debate activities were jump-started by Prof. Geyoung-Ho Hur who
spent a month last summer at UVM's World Debate Institute. The LDU plans to
webcast various parts of the event.
Professors Jufei Wang of Asian Studies and Snider are also working on a networking project with schools in China, and there may well be a side trip to Beijing during this same trip.
Debate and argument training texts, huge number of instructional videos, and more available at the LDU website, DEBATE CENTRAL, the largest and most comprehensive debate website in the world.
