As Voice of Edwin Changes Hands for the Semester, Students Prepare for Georgia State and Cornell

Georgia State is coming up quickly! The "gang of four" as Tuna has dubbed them, continues to work hard with the new coaches to prepare for this tough competition. Schools from all over the country are entered, including many returning debaters who were among the top ranking teams. There was a practice debate held this weekend, the new team of Leslie and Stephanie continued improvement while the good ol' boys, Nick and Jason heard harsh criticisms on how to reach the high goals they set. The transition to a new coaching staff is running relatively smooth. It is always difficult when traditional practices change, and all in all, things are going well. Coaches and debaters alike are learning from each other and coming together to form a more extended LDU family. All of the LDU debaters are excited to work with Dave and John and learn new insights and ideologies that they bring to our region of the activity. Nick, Jason, Leslie, Stephanie and Coaches Dave and John all leave this Friday for the warmer, dryer climate of Atlanta for a few days. Be sure to wish them luck!!

Coming up right after GSU is the Cornell tournament, which will be one of the largest UVM turnouts. Dave has a great group of Students from his Introduction to debate class coming and getting involved quickly in debate. Many students are also showing up for meeting who aren't involved in the class. It looks like once again UVM will continue its excellence in JV and Novice debate with strong dedicated debaters at all levels. All students should be sure and get letters from Dave or John for the professors if they will be missing class on Friday.

While the LDU'ers continued to prepare for the 2006-2007 season, there were many tournaments that were held this past weekend. University of Northern Iowa, Gonzaga University in Washington State, and West Virginia University all held tournaments in novice, JV, and Varsity. The LDU'ers took advantage of the case lists that came out to further prepare their arguments and positions. One surprising thing that came from the arguments that were 'broke' at these tournaments was the more leftist approach, even traditional policy debate teams are taking on this new topic.

The Huber House has been busy as ever these past few weeks, and as usual the amount of preparation usually coincides with success on the team. It will be rough attending a tournament without Tuna for the first time in many years. While the LDU misses him a great deal we know he is doing great things in Europe and most importantly having fun! It was a shaky start without him here for the beginning of the competitive season, but he will be with us all at tournaments, and hopefully he will return to a team that has showed a great deal of growth, successes and teamwork.

NOTES FROM MONDAY NIGHT'S 6 PM MEETING:

Van Driver Training

Sat. 9/23: 8-10am Kalkin 001

Every debater should take driver training even if they don't plan on driving.  The way we get to tournaments is by renting vans; however, we can only rent those vans if we have an adequate amount of trained driver. Shane Clark is coordinating the two upcoming session and people should email him to register for either session.   You will need to bring your license and an ink pen to the session.

The teams going to GSU need help this weekend! Any debaters or Alums who want to help should contact Dave (dvereg@gmail.com), help will be needed Saturday night and Monday morning for cutting updates. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!

Next week's meeting will be run by Megan, Matt J and Ethan N, since Dave & John will still be in Georgia. THERE IS A MEETING!
