LDU BANQUET A HUGE SUCCESS

LDU debaters and coaches pose to celebrate the end of the 2001-2002 season

Over 65 people crowded the Waterman Manor at UVM for the LDU 2002 banquet. Many parents were there, as were a frew memorable and welcome alumni. The mood was loving, passionate, and intense, but everyone seemed to agree it was positive. The parents seemed particularly pleased at the event, as Leslie Fishbone asked for inclusion in the schedule and spoke for the parents when he thanked the LDU for the incredible opportunities it provides to students.

A special award went to Jackie Massey, our departing and beloved coach. President Jillian Marty presented a plaque to Jackie as well as a thick booklet of photos and letters from his many debaters from his four year term at UVM. Jackie responded with a stirring poem he had written for the event. We will try and publish it in weeks to come. Another special award was presented by the students to our staff friend Sahn Son who works in 475 Main for his hard work and supportive attitude.

Debater awards were presented next. Adam Gana was the first recipient of the Jackie Massey Award for Best Senior Novice Debater. Sheila Limprevil was the Frank Sonneborn Award for Best First Year Debater. The Edward P. Butler Prizes for Eloquence in Oratory went to Teresa Hill and Lana Langsweirdt. The Robert and George Ashton Lawrence Prizes went to Charles Hoag, Abigail Trebilcock, and Sheila Limprevil. The Robert Ashton Lawrence Class of 1899 Memorial Prizes for Debating went to Brian Cole, Claudia Greenman, Aaron Fishbone, Jillian Marty, and Shawn Wilkerson.

Senior speeches were once again moving and sincere to say the least. Senior speeches were given by Aaron Fishbone, Casey Gervais, Claudia Greenman, Adam Gana, Charles Hoag, Jake Ricker, Meredith Parmett, Matt Sweeney, and Abigail Trebilcock.

UVM DEBATE TO ATTEND SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SPANISH LANGUAGE DEBATE TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN PUERTO RICO IN MAY

RETURN TO NYC - LAGUARDIA 1:59 PM MONDAY 13 MAY 2002

| UVM Coach Snider lectures last year |

UVM's World Debate Institute and the newly formed World Debate Organization are proud sponsors of this event. The tournament website is at http://bc.inter.edu/cit_form.nsf/contactanos_debate .

Last year UVM entered the only team from the USA to attend the Torneo Hispanoamericano de Debate held at Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile. This year the UVM team has been invited back, and UVM coach Snider has been invited to present a workshop on judging and assist with the management of the tournament. The tournament will be held at Universidad Interamericano in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 7-11, 2002. Last year's event was truly groundbreaking, as for the first time UVM students debated in a second language at an international tournament, to the acclaim of the Spanish speaking teams who were deeply impressed by Americans who understood that to be truly international debate must occur in a variety of languages. "They are so used to Americans demanding that all debates be in English that they were impressed by our willingness to put ourselves at risk in a second language. The team performed well, receiving several standing ovations during the competition," said coach Snider. "This year, we hope to do even better."

Retiring UVM coach Jackie Massey will be attending the tournament. Friend of UVM debate and famous Spanish language debate coach Rodrigo Rojas of Universidad Diego Portales, now pursuing a Fulbright at New York University, has agreed to help coach the team before the tournament.

There will be a series of live webcasts of debates and other parts of the tournament, presented by the Debate Central website http://debate.uvm.edu .

The program that the New York Times called "Boot camp for the brain and for free speech as well," [August 9, 2002, p. A12] returns for a 20th summer on the UVM campus. The World Debate Institute last year attracted over 300 people from more than 15 nations for high intensity training for two weeks. WDI will offer a two week high school policy workshop, a one week national high school leadership workshop, a college policy debate workshop, a college parliamentary workshop, an international debate workshop, as well as coach training programs.

The current CEDA National Champions, Joe Ramsey and Jason Regnier, were WDI students last summer.
