VERMONT DEBATE WINS GRANT TO TRAIN NEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The Open Society Institute and the New York Urban Debate League have reached agreement with the Lawrence Debate Union to send 120 students and 28 coaches to the 1999 World Debate Institute to be held at UVM this August. Beth Breger, Program Officer at OSI, noted that the UVM program was chosen "based on the excellent national reputation of the University of Vermont's World Debate Institute." Students will join those already attending the high school portion of WDI. WDI Director Snider commented, "We have been working with the NYUDL and UDLs in other cities for over two years now, and we are deeply honored that they would choose UVM for this task as we are also pleased that they have decided to make such a large financial commitment to training inner city students." Snider noted that the WDI program would have to be substantially beefed up to handle the enlarged number of attendees. This will certainly be the largest event in its 17 year history.
