STRONG SHOWING AT TOWSON
#2 & #3 IN VARSITY, #9 IN NOVICE

Over 138 debate teams gathered in Maryland at Towson University this last weekend for the annual Chesapeake Classic, JV Nationals, and Novice Nationals. The LDU collected a 22-18 record and all teams put in a solid showing.
In the Novice Nationals division the team of DELETED '99 and Jordan Clark '00 finished NINTH IN THE NATION. In the elimination rounds they bested the University of Richmond 3-0 before losing to Vanderbilt 3-0. Allana Alexander was recognized as the #20 NOVICE DEBATER IN THE NATION. She and Kenan Osmanovic finished 3-4 along with Peter Winfield and Aaron Fishbone.
In the varsity division no school was more dominant that Vermont. Raelynn Schwartz and Justin Parmett were 4-3 in prelims, and then scored 3-0 victories over Kansas State and Middle Tennessee before losing in the final 2-1 to George Mason University, to finish SECOND in the tournament. Meanwhile, Sarah Snider and Helen Morgan were 6-1 in prelims and were given byes into the semifinal round, where they lost 3-0 to George Mason, thus finishing THIRD in the tournament. Sarah was the SECOND speaker in the tournament, Helen was the FOURTH, and Raelynn was the SEVENTH.
In related news, two LDU alumni were named as the top two out of 92 judges at the tournament in a ballot by students. Lisa Heller, now coach at the University of Richmond, and Maxwell Schnurer, now coach at Pittsburgh, collected the honors. Another LDU alum, Paul Kerr, now at South Carolina, was 8th.
