UVM VARSITY IS #1 IN THE EAST

DEBATER OF THE YEAR - TOP VARSITY SPEAKER

#3 NOVICE TEAM - #1 VARSITY TEAM

The Lawrence Debate Union posted a 21-13 record overall and won the varsity championship and a variety of other awards at the CEDA East Regional Debate Championships held at the University of Rochester this last weekend. Justin Parmett and Raelynn Schwartz racked up a 7-1 record on the weekend. After being 5-1 in the preliminary debates, they bested rival Rochester (Gulati & Nwobu) 3-0 in the semifinal debate on the negative, and then won 2-1 over rival Cornell (Edwards & Ostafin) 2-1 in the final debate, when they were once again negative. In the final round Cornell argued for inclusion of Native American enterprises under Title 7 of the 1964 Civil Rights Act to deal with sexual harassment and other discrimination issues, and the University of Vermont's position was that Native American sovereignty is paramount and should not be further compromised.
Raelynn Schwartz was recognized as the East Debater of the Year, based on nominating letters. She joins Jethro Hayman (UVM), Cleopatra Jones (UVM), and Jessica Wojtisiak (Cornell) as winners of this award. Justin Parmett was the Top Speaker at the tournament, and his first such varsity award could not have come at a better time. Raelynn was the Third Speaker, Sarah Snider was Ninth. Sarah Snider and Helen Morgan finished 3-3 but delivered a devastating loss to Cornell in Round Six.
In the Junior Varsity division Greta Lockwood and Fiona Mahoney finished 2-4, but both were named to the Top Ten Speakers list -- Fiona was 9th and Greta 10th.
In Novice debate the team of Aaron Fishbone and Peter Winfield finished as the Third best novice debate team in the East. They were 5-1 in the preliminary debates, defeated Rochester (Shutt & Urbach) 2-1 in the quarterfinal round before losing to Towson (McMullen & Breandwein) 2-1 in the semifinal round. Aaron was named the 9th speaker in the novice division.
BUT WAIT ... THERE'S MORE ...
In the East Region Grand Sweepstakes (best performance by all teams at designated tournaments during the year) it was Rochester First, Vermont Second.
In the East Region Select Sweepstakes (best performance by best two teams at designated tournaments during the year) it was Towson First, Vermont Second. The title was decided in the Novice semifinal debate, won by Towson 2-1.
Gordie Miller received a special award as the #3 most preferred judge in the East, but at the same time was elected by attending schools to represent the East region as a judge in the Final Round of the CEDA Nationals coming up in March, an honor reserved for the top debate judge in the region.
