CLOSE BUT NO AWARDS IN WASHINGTON STATE

Teams face good competition at Western Washington University
Break round disappointment; former coach Woods hosts Catamounts

The LDU sent two teams out to Seattle and then on to Bellingham and Western Washington University for the 2003 Koma Kulshan debates (named after the mountain above Bellingham's original name). There was a 20 team policy tournament along with a 108 team parliamentary tournament. Steve Woods, former LDU coach and now Director at WWU, had invited coach Snider to come and tab the tournament and had purchased him a ticket. The teams got off to a 4-0 start on Friday and then stumbled a bit on Saturday as Brian Cole and Jennifer Knops finished 3-3, losing their break round, while Jillian Marty and Sheila Limprevil finished 2-4. The competition was really excellent and the hospitality was outstanding. The team got to see the beauty of the area as well as the beauty of the campus.

WWU has borrowed a number of things from the LDU, including a newsletter and public debates. WWU has some innovative projects that the LDU may copy, including a monthly "Let's Talk" session where the debate team hosts an open forum about a hot issue, and has become very successful. They also serve as expert assistance and support for community groups and NGOs interested in developing their communication and public presentation skills.
