These institutions and coaches invite UDL debaters to investigate admission to these schools and may have significant financial aid for debaters. We provide this as a service and encourage students to investigate these opportunities on their own. We do not endorse any of these schools or programs, but they have volunteered this information and seem very interested in expanding college opportunities for UDL students.

buy" in higher education. A Virginia resident's annual tuition, fees,
room and board total $8,694 and for a non-Virginia resident annual tuition,
fees, room and board are $15,124.
Scholarships are typically merit-based or need-based gifts to students that
do not need to be re-paid. Here are some of the ones most commonly offered
to MWC students:
THE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: [merit-based; all freshmen applicants] The
scholarship program provides awards to a group of the most academically outstanding
students who enter the freshman class each year. Renewable scholarships are
awarded to incoming freshmen; most are $500 or $1,000. A select number of
students are offered scholar- ships covering 100% of in-state tuition and
fees. Alumni Scholars will be selected from freshmen applicants who are accepted
for Honors Admission and Early Decision. The recipients are chosen by the
profes- sional staff of the Office of Admissions, upon conclusion of the Honors
Admission review process.
THE WASHINGTON SCHOLAR: [merit-based; VA residents only]
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: [need-based; VA residents only] Applicants
must undergraduate students, enrolled for at least 6 hours of credit (MWC
gives priority to full-time students), and residents of Virginia who demonstrate
need. Awards range from $2,000 down to $400 a year, for our neediest students.
COMMONWEALTH & VGAP SCHOLARSHIPS: [need-based; VA residents only] These
scholarships are awarded by the College on the basis of demonstrated financial
need to at least half time students who are legal residents of Virginia.
MWC MINORITY STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP: [racial minority; freshmen applicants only]

VIRGINIA TRANSFER GRANT PROGRAM: [racial minority; transfer students] Grants
of up to full tuition are available to racial minority students who transfer
to one of Virginia's traditionally white public senior institutions (like
MWC) of higher education.
OTHER OUT OF STATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS: [non VA residents] Out-of-state students
should contact their state grant/scholarship agency of high school guidance
counselor for information about possible state grant assistance.
In addition, there are more than 80 scholarships and awards totaling over
$100,000, awarded each year based on majors, special talents, and leadership.

What kind of scholarships does your institution provide?
There are some private scholarships. You would have to talk to financial aid
to get the long list.
Do you offer debate scholarships?
Yes, as many as possible.
Methodist will offer $400/ semester for each "recruited" freshman
student. The school does offer $200/ semester for student who are not "recruited."
There are other benefits. Primarily, our program is highly novice-centered;
meaning, new students can debate right at the beginning as opposed to becoming
research mules for varsity.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND/OR FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE FOR DEBATERS: If a student qualifies
for the honors college, the stipend may be increased slightly for a debate
scholarship. As there are no endowed debate scholarships, they are given only
as funds are raised on a year to year basis. Renewal is contingent on student
academic and debating performancs as well as available funds.
For Honors college a $250-$500 additional stipend for semester. For Work Study,
up to $1,500 a semester, based on need For regular debate scholarship, amount,
usually no more than $250 per semester, varies on available funds, assuming
funds are available for that year.

Most team members receive partial scholarships ranging from several hundred
dollars for students just beginning to several thousand for those with significant
experience. It is possible to improve on those totals for returning students
with several years experience on the team.
Point Loma Nazarene University is a faith based institution that is committed
to excellence in education and is affiliated with the Nazarene Church. Admissions
counselors will be looking for students that fit the goals of the University.
We look for students that embrace evangelical Christian beliefs, not necessarily
just of the Nazarene Denomination. There are over 40 denominational beliefs
represented in our student body, with the largest being Nazarene, less than
a third as I recall. As a holiness church there are lifestyle rules and restrictions
against such things as drinking, smoking, taking recreational drugs and participating
in premarital or extra marital sex. While the current diversity of the University
is not very strong, many of us are committed to improving that deficit.
Additionally, Pt Loma is perhaps the most beautiful college campus in the
country, located on the beaches and cliffs of San Diego overlooking the Pacific
Ocean. Speech and Debate is almost as popular as surfing at Pt Loma, well
not quite but gaining. Our speech program is very active in Parliamentary
Debate and the standard individual events. We welcome students desiring to
know more about our program.

The William Pitt Debating Union is a student organization involved in a wide
range of debating activities, including two-person intercollegiate policy
debate, international parliamentary debate, and various forms of public debate.
One of the oldest organizations of its kind in the nation, the Union is directly
affiliated with the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh.
The director of the WPDU teaches courses in the communication department,
and the assistant coaches pursue graduate degrees in the department of communication.
The undergraduate student members of the WPDU typically have disparate academic
concentrations and backgrounds, although many choose to major in communication.
The bedrock philosophy of the William Pitt Debating Union is that argument
can educate as well as emancipate. By providing for students a forum to sharpen
their critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of contemporary
political issues, and hone their abilities as actors in the public realm,
the Union actualizes its educational mission. By spurring robust, inclusive
debate and discussion in the public community, the Union performs its politically
emancipatory function, serving as a catalyst for reasoned public dialogue
on key issues facing society. Much of the Union's energy in pursuing these
tasks comes from a team culture which places a premium on group solidarity
and cooperation. Such cooperation is vital to cultivation of a pedagogically
rich learning environment, competitive success in intercollegiate contests,
and to political mobilization in defense of open public argument. In their
activities, members of the Union are expected not only to contribute in a
dynamic and cooperative way to these goals, but to consistently meet the highest
standards of integrity in research, teamwork and advocacy. Located in the
heart of the University's academic environment, the Debating Union occupies
the eastern wing on the eleventh floor of the Cathedral of Learning. Loaded
with plenty of work space, computer terminals, photocopying and other amenities,
the Debating Union has become a cozy second home for its members. Hillman
Library, across the street from the Cathedral, houses the University's more
than six-million volume collection. Researching in the Oakland area, debaters
also have access to the twenty four specialty libraries, the famous Carnegie
public library (a stone's throw from the cathedral), the University of Pittsburgh's
law school library, Carnegie Mellon University's library, and Duquesne University's
library. Altogether, this adds up to one of the finest library systems anywhere.
Technologically the University is at the cutting edge of the computer age,
with seven laboratories which include full service logistical support. The
Union pays for virtually all expenses associated with participation in intercollegiate
debate, including supplies, photocopying, transportation, housing and meals
at tournaments. In addition, the Union offers tuition scholarships to well
qualified candidates, and serves as a placement clearinghouse helping students
find opportunities to generate additional income through debate-related jobs.
The University of Pittsburgh also makes available an array of both need and
merit based financial aid; more than 70% of Pitt students receive some kind
of support. WPDU scholarships are renewable contingent on strong academic
performance, team commitment, and personal progress. The purpose of the WPDU
scholarships is to reward the balanced student who shows outstanding performance
in both academic and extracurricular activities. Because of its medium size
and excellent location, the WPDU is able to offer a robust assortment of travel
opportunities to students. The WPDU's long standing tradition of successful
competition at the highest levels of the national circuit continued last year,
with the Panthers making frequent appearances in the elimination rounds at
major tournaments, including novice nationals. Located in NDT District VII,
Pittsburgh is in close proximity to the most well-attended novice tournaments
in the nation, and thus can offer a challenging schedule to the beginning
intercollegiate debater. In addition to these intercollegiate tournament debating
opportunities, students in the WPDU can work toward the goal of international
travel in parliamentary competition. Because extensive debate travel can be
time-intensive, all members of the WPDU carrying a full travel schedule are
required to maintain a 3.0 grade-point average and are required to effectively
balance course work and debate obligations. The Union is not just an academic
center for debate and discussion; it embraces the challenge of serving as
a catalyst of constructive public dialogue outside the walls of the university
as well. To this end, the team develops and implements"idea-logical"initiatives,
designed to free up space for wide-open public discussion through the sponsoring
of public debates, the application of political and media pressure for increased
institutional transparency, and the stimulation of dialogue on pressing issues
facing local, regional, and national communities. Interested students have
the opportunity of focusing on these projects by investing their energy in
the Activist Debate Network (ADN), the branch of the Union devoted to this
task of bolstering public dialogue. The mission of ADN is to go beyond traditional
debate pedagogy to emphasize debatersU roles as actors in and beyond contest
rounds, and aim to make debate practice more relevant in the public sphere.
The aim is to build up experience and develop expertise in public advocacy;
to refine and amplify the public voices of students, and bring students into
public conversations with interlocutors inside and outside the university.
ADN activities are designed to maximize participation, and the ADN tends to
draw students who have other obligations that prevent them from traveling
on long weekends and have limited previous debate experience. The Union's
debating activities spill over national boundaries. In December, 1996, the
team traveled to Cork, Ireland for the World Debating Championships. The Union
regularly hosts foreign national teams on their debating tours of the United
States, having recently entertained the British national team in both 1994
and 1995. In previous years, the WPDU has served as host to the Russian, Irish,
and Australian national teams. These initiatives build on a long tradition
of internatioal debating at Pitt, started with Director Robert Newman's remarkable
exchange series with the University of West Indies in the 1950s and 60s. In
addition to these direct efforts, the WPDU also encourages its members to
apply for international tours organized by the Speech Communication Association's
Committee on International Discussion and Debate. Former assistant coach Pete
Bsumek was selected to the national U.S. team for the 1991 tour of Great Britain,
and current assistant coach Maxwell Schnurer was just recently selected to
the national U.S. team for the 1999 tour of Japan. Because these international
engagements are largely conducted in the parliamentary format, partipants
are required to display effective audience debating skills, in addition to
the crisp critical reasoning and sharp organiztional skills vital for success
in the NDT ranks. The international component of debating activites at the
WPDU also helps to stimulate debate interest in other parts of the world and
enhance the reputation of the University of Pittsburgh worldwide. With a full-time
director and numerous graduate teaching assistants working with debate, the
William Pitt Debating Union boasts one of the largest and most experienced
coaching staffs anywhere in the country. While coaches are not expected to
cut cards, they are expected to take a hands on approach to argument innovation
and development. The unique and rare combination of vibrant academic interests
and a strong background at the highest level of college debate place this
group at the cutting edge of contemporary debate theory and practice. The
Union's coaching alums have continued coaching at the highest levels of college
debate, and include current directors at North Carolina, James Madison, Northern
Illinois, Northern Iowa, George Mason, Clarion, and Georgia. Members of the
current staff have coached and taught previously at prestigious universities
such as Wake Forest, Northwestern, Michigan, Vermont, Georgetown and American.
