ATLANTA -- WHERE IT ALL STARTED!

WHERE IT COMES FROM....

The concept of the Urban Debate League was the result of instructional tournaments hosted by Emory University over a period of ten years for Atlanta Public Schools and Decatur City Schools, and now includes South Dekalb County and South Fulton County high schools, and the junior high program serves public and private schools in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. The program was to create an instructional model that would create an environment of incentives for students and teachers to take over their own involvement in competitive tournament debate. Toward this end the program was designed to: instruct teachers in flowing, judging, and critiquing debates; instruct students in public speaking skills and anxiety reduction; instruct students in argument construction, advancement, and extension; instruct students in cross-examination technique; provide National Forensic League (NFL) membership as a requirement for the program; and provide tangible awards for participation by both students and teachers. In its history, the Urban Debate League has served students of the Atlanta Public School System and the Decatur City Schools. All of these high schools are composed of student populations that are predominately (in excess of ninety-five percent) African-American. Three one-day tournaments are held on the Emory University campus each year. Each tournament features three rounds of debate competition followed by an extensive instructional critique. After each day of competition, a formal awards assembly is held where substantial trophy awards are disseminated. After all three tournaments, a formal Awards Dinner is held on the Emory campus.
