SCUDL Growth Leads to Large Tournaments and Regional Recognition

The Southern California Urban Debate League (SCUDL) has added six new schools to the list of competitors in this 2000-2001 season, and there are promises for even more before the year is over!

October 28 saw the first SCUDL-only tournament, hosted at the beautiful Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California. This tournament brought in over 40 two-person debate teams from nine schools representing the Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Pomona and San Gabriel Unified School Districts. In addition to last year's three participating high schools, Los Amigos, Saddleback and Santa Ana, this tournament included participants from Bolsa Grande, Century, Diamond Ranch, Gabrielino, Garey, and La Quinta High Schools.

Every school that attended the tournament went home with at least one award and a lot of the schools went home with many. The newer schools show great promise for a successful future in team policy debate!

On the same weekend, the SCUDL team of Howard Nguyen and Vay Yam were rewarded for their outstanding performance at last year's Cypress Invitational (Gold Medal winners in junior Varsity division), with an invitation to the prestigious Pepperdine University Round Robin tournament in Malibu, California. Howard and Vay represented themselves, their schools, their communities and the SCUDL with a great record! Read about their experience below!

Los Amigos' Nguyen and Yam Post a Winning Record at Prestigious Round Robin

Los Amigos seniors Howard Nguyen and Vay Yam debated to achieve a 3-2 win/loss record at the prestigious Pepperdine University Round Robin on October 28-29. The tournament was held on Pepperdine's beautiful Malibu campus. Accompanied by coach Jeri Roberts, CSUF student coach, Toni Nielson and SCUDL Director Sylvia Beltran, Howard and Vay competed against high school teams from across the country. Schools were in attendance from Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada. Los Amigos posted wins against two of California's most accomplished private high schools, Damien and Notre Dame, with their only two losses coming from two of the four teams who advanced into the semi-final round. This was a very tough tournament, and Howard and Vay represented the SCUDL very well indeed!

Competitive Debuts Predict Promising Future

Bolsa Grande High School

After attending the CSU, Long Beach tournament as spectators, the Bolsa Grande teams had an impressive showing at the October 28 Claremont McKenna Tournament. Coaches Hannah Nguyen and Lou Podesta were both in attendance helping their three teams in the novice division: Mouna Chawma/Lizette Pimentel Anna Liu/Amy Couch (14th place-novice team) Danh Vo/Peter Luong

Amy Couch received an individual speaker award for 17th and Peter Luong placed 24th, missing a spot in the top 20 by only 1/2 of a point. Bolsa Grande looks to be an up-and-coming addition to the SCUDL!

Century High School

SCUDL's newest addition, Century High School, had three and one half teams competing in the October 28 tournament. Century started its program only a few weeks ago and was still able to compete successfully in the novice division. Accompanied by their coach, Tally Burkhart, the three and one half teams were: Charles AguilartIvan Ninichuck (18th place-novice team) Monica Sarmientl/Pablo Aguilar Susanna Salcedo/Maria Elena Alcantar Omar Hernandez, whose partner was unable to attend. Omar volunteered to debate with someone he had never met before from La Quinta High School, showing both courage and dedication!

Ivan Ninichuck boasted a 6th place individual speaker award in his first-ever debate competition.

With only a few weeks of preparation, Century proved to be tough competitors. This promises to be a successful squad as they increase in experience and knowledge!

Accompanied by their CSU, Fullerton student coach, Amy Dempster, the teams were: Loan Co/Ngoc Bui (12th place-novice team) Phuong Thy Nguyen/Tuan Phan Ashley Dang, who volunteered to debate with Century's Omar Hernandez when her partner was unable to attend.
