Vermont is Northeast Universities Debate Champion

It was a mixed bag in Binghamton, New York this weekend. There was a huge snow storm that caused many people to cancel and some travel difficulties for the Lawrence Debate Union, the policy debaters struggled mightily and came up just short, but the worlds debaters romped to huge success and the Northeast Unoiversities Debating Championship title.

The weather was a difficult start. The coaching staff was constantly scanning weather sites and road conditions, and it was thought that the trip might be cancelled, but after a meeting the coaches decided to go ahead because of the forecast that snow would end by the time we got to Binghamton. Safety is always the first concern, and it was in this instance. Care, caution and low speeds made it a safe journey for all three vans. Special thanks to all drivers.

The policy squad was represented by Marnie Ritchie and Chuck Harris trying to qualify for the National Debate Tournament and Nate Robertson and Alex Martel trying to win the JV northeast championship. Both came up short. Marnie and Chuck started with a 5-3 record on day one (each debate has two judges) and Nate and Alex were 3-2. Day two was a problem, as Marnie & Chuck were pulled up in the pairings twice (now five straight qualifer rounds where UVM has been pulled up) and lost both to put them out of the running. Nate & Alex debated well, but lost a disputed decision in their out round. Alex Martel was the #4 speaker in the JV tournament, and we congratulate him on an honor he has earned. David Register and Edwin Owusu served as coaches and judges.

The worlds squad was represented by eight teams, with Stephen Boyle and Alfred Snider serving as judges. In prelims it was a huge success for UVM, as Sam Natale & Sarah Anders were first seed, Paul Gross & Isaac Loeb were fourth, Tom Dionesotes & Alli Hamlin were sixth, and John Sadek & Jessica Bullock were fourtenth, all advancing to the elimination rounds. It was a tough moment for Ana Dru Ellis and Josh Mangiagli who lost out on speaker points to be sixteenth, 907 to 904. In quarterfinals three teams advanced to the semifinals, including Sam & Sarah, Paul & Isaac and in their first ever elimination round win, John & Jessica. With three teams in semifinals, only one advanced to the finals, Paul & Isaac. But there, they made it work. In a clear decision they were declared the winners over Cornell and two teams from Colgate. In the speaker awards it was a similar story, with Sam Natale first, Sarah Anders second, Paul Gross fourth and Isaac Loeb seventh. Tom Dionesotes, Alli Hamlin and Jessica Bullock were also in the top twenty.

But there was more to come. In the SAMBA awards David Register was named as COACH OF THE YEAR. On the judge feedback tab in the worlds tournament Stephen Boyle was named as the TOP JUDGE.

Marnie & Chuck have applied for a second round bid to the National Debate Tournament and we will have news next week.
