2. i hope people will send tips for recruiting which i will compile into a
document. these tips apply for reaching out to all kinds of students/people.

I am sure that a lot of people will hit on the main points of recruiting, but
these are some things I have learned since I have been at Baylor.

The best advice I have for recruiting is to provide anyone who might listen with
information about what you are doing. The best students with whom I have worked
have been those who sought me out--not necessarily those whom I sought. Just
getting some visibility so that people in your university and your area know you
are there. Flyers, the school paper, press releases, you and your students
talking about their efforts in classes, talking among other faculty--all of that
information may trickle down to someone who will be interested.

One good way to get visibility is community service. Baylor has long had a
commitment to involving students in community service. Waco has also had a
significant involvement in Clinton's youth summit idea. We do a fall and a
spring community service project. That is good for our kids, and gets us some
involvement with people who might not have known we exist.

We also widely advertise our public debates in the community as well as at the
University. That reminds the community that we exist. I have had several students
who have walked in the door because a friend of a friend heard about something
we were doing and thought they should check us out.

The list of people who should be informed includes your alumni. Some of my best
recruiters are my alums--and their parents. The students fan out all over the
country when they leave and they make great contacts. Moreover, the parents are
excited by the way debate has contributed to their kids' lives. They will talk
to their friends and those they meet and send good kids--even if they have no
debate experience--your direction.

Director: Marty Most (Fall); Robert Boren (Spring)

Contact information:
Dept. of Communication
1910 University Drive
Boise, ID 83725
(208) 426-3327

Mission Statement/Description of the program:
Forensics at Boise State University is offered under the auspices of the Department of Communication as an extension of the department's Rhetoric and Communication Education programs. The Forensics Program also serves to enrich the liberal arts education of undergraduate students from all the university's academic disciplines.

We believe forensics alone is a poor criterion for the selection of an institution of higher education. Therefore, the Boise State University Forensics Program does not recruit students outside its student population unless those students first indicate an interest in attending Boise State. As an ethical issue, we do not believe collegiate forensics programs should initiate contact with individual high school or junior college competitors. It is our observation that schools that ardently recruit forensics competitors in this fashion do not always put the best interests of students above those of the forensics program.

Persons interested in attending BSU are invited to contact the New Student Information Office (208) 426-1820, or the director of forensics for more information.

Types of activities your program offers: Parliamentary Debate and all individual events.

BSU enrolls 15,000 students from all 50 states and 38 foreign countries in more than 75 undergraduate degree and 25 graduate degree programs in the Colleges of Education, Arts and Sciences, Business, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Social Sciences and Public Affairs.

>Mission Statement/Description of the program
The ECU speech and debate program extends the communication curriculum in
ways classroom experiences cannot replicate. Our program is open to all
students regardless of their level of previous experience or achievement,
because we feel that everyone can benefit from the educational
opportunities provided by competitive speech and debate activities. The
goal of our program is learning; what our students win through competition
(in addition to trophies and plaques) are lessons they can apply throughout
their lives.

>Types of activities your program does
We travel to tournaments so we can compete in debate and individual events.
We host the annual state tournament for Oklahoma colleges and universities.
We participate in ECU's annual interscholastic meet. We also participate in
a variety of college and departmental activities. We provide service and
leadership for other forensics professionals and organizations.

>Scholarship Availability and terms
The A. Linscheid and D.J. Nabors scholarships are awarded annually to
students active in the speech and debate program. Through the Communication
Department our Board of Regents also awards fee waiver grants to students
who meet minimal GPA and program activity standards. All awards are based
on the applicant's level of participation (not level of success), working
relationship with faculty and peers, and educational achievement. The
university president is kind enough to waive a portion of out-of-state
tuition for program participants.

>Brief description of the school
ECU is a mostly-undergraduate university of about 4000 students located in
Ada, OK (population c. 16,000). We offer 39 degree programs. The
Communication Department offers study in Speech Communication, Theatre,
Speech Education, Elecltronic & Print Media and Advertising/Public
Relations. Our department, like the university, is experiencing a major
upgrade in facilities and technology. We have a small Macintosh compatible
computer lab (with a few Windoze units) which is connected to the ethernet
via T-1 connection through the school server. Our two-year old library is
one of the most heavily used academic libraries in the state, and is
connected to thousands of libraries throughout the nation.

Description of program: GMU Forensics focuses exclusively on the eleven
AFA individual events. The team stresses a team mentality and a strong
work ethic, and benefits from a rich tradition involving significant
alumni support. The campus is a twenty-minute drive from the Library of
Congress and other significant research libraries, and is close to scores
of cultural attractions in the Washington DC area.

No other activities, although GMU also fields an NDT debate team, which is
administratively separate.

The team has minimal scholarships; the university has a variety of half-
and full-ride scholarships and a prestigious scholars program, which has a
positive relationship with the forensics team. The DOF can supply
information about them.

GMU is a young school (about twenty-five years old) that is increasing its
attention on technology and a significant interrelationship with the
Washington-area business community. Many of its students augment their
education on campus with internships at lobbying groups, think tanks,
branches of government, and so on, all benefits of being situated near the
nation's capital.

Lewis & Clark College

Small liberal arts school of some quality located in Portland, Oegon. We
offer humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and science. We do not have
engineering. We are associated with Lewis & Clark Northwestern School of
Law.
We do have merit scholarships and need scholarships. Students interested
should send their forensics credentials and a letter of recommendation
from their director of forensics.

Lewis & Clark Forensics offers policy debate, parliamentary debate, and
individual events. We are members of NDT (National Debate Tournament
policy debate) CEDA (Cross Examination Debate Association policy debate),
NPDA (National Parliamentary Debate Association), PKD (Pi Kappa Delta a
national forensics honorary) WFA (Western States Forensics Association),
NIET (National Individual Events Tournament Association sponsored by AFA
(The American Forensics Associations.)

We believe in the simultaneous and complementary educational and
competitive values of forensics. We believe that debate teaches research
methods, case construction, informs about proof (logic and reasoning and
evidence), helps students organize and improve their language skills,
helps with listening and notetaking, improves refutation and rebuttal, and
assists in presentational/communications skills. We think individual
events help student research, outline and organize, work on language
skills, and helps enormously with fluency and presentation.

>Mission Statement/Description of the program
The UM-St. Louis Forensics and Debate program seeks to provide as
many opportunities to as many sorts of students as possible in a diverse,
urban setting. Membership ranges from those who assist at home tournaments
and summer outreach activities, to those who compete on the national level
in forensics activities. Teaching, Research, and Service constitute the
major dimensions of the program, reflective of its location within an urban
research university. The program is committed to being responsive to the
students who show the desire to compete--"we reward commitment with
commitment"(our original motto) and"learning is winning"(as quoted from
Dr. Sheryl Friedley at George Mason) guide the program's pedagogy. Each
student sets his or her own goals, and if the student is willing to put
forth the effort in addition to stating the desire, the program will do
everything possible to obtain resources to enable each student to meet his
or her own goals. The program serves as a research laboratory for the
impact of forensics participation on its students, as well as how well
forensics activities trains students for the post graduate analogs for each
event. Service both to the local community in the form of the Urban Debate
League-St. Louis, the Advanced Credit Program, and the Gateway Mock Trial
Institute, as well as the local forensics community in the form of the
Gateway and co-hosted Study Break Tournament (with Webster) constitutes a
major element of the UM-St. Louis program.

>Types of activities your program does
Each year, the students choose what events to do. The program
offers from local to national level in all of the AFA individual speaking
events, policy (CEDA/NDT joint) debate, and parliamentary debate. Sporadic
local competition is available in International Public Debate and National
Forensic Association Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

>Scholarship Availability and terms
Scholarships are available and given on a one-year at a time basis,
pending fundraising. The amounts available will vary from year to year,
and are promised on the condition funds are available to cover them--thus
far, every commitment has been fulfilled. Currently, there are five
students on forensics scholarships, which are worth $750.00 per semester
credits to the student's
educational fees (tuition). These scholarships are renewable based on
exemplary performance, but not endowed--thus, the funds must be raised
privately from year to year. The Honors College will waive out-of-state
tuition for those from out of state, and will sometimes supplement the
forensics scholarships for honors college students who debate. Students
eligible for work-study may earn work-study stipends, and those working
with UDL-St. Louis may earn stipends in addition to the competitive
forensics scholarships. Although there are no"full-ride", endowed
scholarships, students have been able to put together full-ride equivalents
through the above means. Although students have received scholarships out
of high school, the program stresses its walk-on dimension and stresses the
earning of scholarships though performance at UM-St. Louis.

>Brief description of the school
The University of Missouri-St. Louis is a relatively new Urban
university. Established in 1963 on the site a golf course operated by the
old Bellerive Country Club, it has grown from one building (the clubhouse
of the old country club) and an outdoor swimming school to a multiblock
complex of both modern and purchased, older buildings. Over 15,000 FTE
students attend UM-St. Louis, and the Continuing Education and Outreach
Program attracts many more. Its initial mission was to provide an
opportunity for a college education to those who could not afford to leave
St. Louis in order to attain one. That mission has expanded to include
students throughout Missouri and the nation, as has its research mission.
It is located in North St. Louis County, near Lambert International
Airport. The St. Louis light rail system, the Metrolink, connects the
campus with both the Airport and Downtown, and soon will be expanded into
eastern Illinois. Although the student population is largely commuter,
three dormitories and an apartment complex operated by a private company in
conjunction with the University, University Meadows, have expanded the
student body to include out of state and international students. UM-St.
Louis has the largest African American student body population of any
institution of higher learning in the state of Missouri. The Forensics and
Debate Club, although housed in the Communication Department (400 majors),
is funded both privately (82 percent in 98-99) and through student activity
fees (18 per cent). Political Science and Optometry house the school's
most noted graduate programs, and the school participates in NCAA Division
II athletics, with the most noted programs being men's soccer and baseball.

Brief description of the school
Ohio State is the largest institution of higher learning in the country with
an enrollment of about 55,000 students. Situated in Columbus, the largest
city in Ohio, it is not in the city, yet close enough to offer all the
attractions a big city can. Ohio State has every conceivable major and
minor, has a very diverse student body and faculty, and is known far and
wide for Football. Go Buckeyes!!

As far as recruiting, we use a lot of referrals by high school coaches and
competitors. Most of Ohio's talented students come to Ohio State anyway,
it's more a matter of finding them when they get here, getting them active,
and making sure they don't drift away into the huge student body.

Brief description of the school:

Pace University is a diverse institution with nearly 14,000 students. For 92
years, bright, motivated and talented men and women have walked out of Pace's
many doors, degrees in hand and have ventured into the world prepared for the
challenges of each passing decade. Every year curriculum offerings in the
schools and colleges are modified to meet the changing needs of ambitious and
knowledgeable students.

Pace University draws its strength from being a unified institution that
offers students a choice of three locations, each with its own distinctive
atmosphere, ranging from the quintessential urban (New York City) to small
city (White Plains) to suburban/ rural (Pleasantville/Briarcliff).

The New York City campus, located in the heart of the civic and financial
center of the city, is impressive not only in its physical attributes, but as
an intellectual and cultural focal point for one of New York City's most
dynamic and revitalized areas. The interaction between campus and community
serves to benefit both.

At Pace's Midtown Center graduate and undergraduate courses are offered in day
and evening sessions. Those who work or live in midtown Manhattan have found
that this facility offers them flexibility and convenience.

The Pleasantville/Briarcliff campus in mid-Westchester County is set on 200
acres of rolling countryside where the University flourishes as a preeminent
institution of higher education offering a broad range of undergraduate degree
programs, and graduate programs in nursing.

In 1977, Pace acquired Briarcliff College, a short distance from Pleasantville
in Briarcliff Manor. Residence halls, recreational facilities and
administrative offices are located here, as well as the renowned Hastings
Center, which carries out
educational and research programs on ethical issues in medicine, the life
sciences and the professions. Just a few miles apart, Pace administers these
locations together, and provides shuttle bus service between the campuses.

The White Plains campus on North Broadway, and the Evelyn and Joseph I. Lubin
Graduate Center in the heart of White Plains, provide opportunities for
students to pursue a variety of educational programs. The White Plains campus
is the site of the nationally-ranked Pace University School of Law. The
Graduate Center, across the street from the White Plains Railroad Station,
houses programs in business, public administration and computer science.

While each campus has its own distinct flavor, all are linked by the powerful
features of a Pace education.

Throughout the years since 1906, Pace has grown along with the talents of
those who comprise what is affectionately known as the"Pace community."

The 1998-1999 SJC Forensics Team is in its 4th year of intercollegiate
competition. The team participates in IE, and LD debate and hopes to
participate in Parlimentary debate later on this year. Our program
emphasizes both education and competition, and participates in many
activities on and off campus. This year's team consists of 21 members,
including 7 debaters.

The SJC Forensics Team offers $1500/year performance scholarships to incoming
freshmen and transfer students. Requirements for the scholarship include a
minimum 2.5 entering GPA, maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA by the end of
academic year, participating in at least three tournaments a semester,
hosting prospective students on campus, and participating in several on and
off campus community projects.

SJC offers numerous academic scholarhips including Presidential (full ride)
scholarships, Honors ($6000) and Deans ($4500) scholarships, and the Huhn
Minority Leadership Awards. Most team members have some form of acadrmic
scholarship in addition to forensics scholarships.

SJC is a Catholic liberal arts college of about 1000 students located in
rural Northwest Indiana. Rensselaer, a town of 5,000 and home to SJC, is
located 90 miles south of Chicago and 90 miles north of Indianapolis off of
Interstate 65. We are a Division II college and participate in the Great
Lakes Valley Conference.

More information about the SJC Forensics Team can be found at our webpage at
www.saintjoe.edu/comunication

Tips for Recruiting

1. We try to host at least one overnight campus visit in the spring.
Prospective students stay with current team members and the member show them
around, take them to class, etc. Doing at all once is a great help in
talking to all recruits at the same time.
2. Current team members said they liked getting personal phone calls from me
and other team members. Since our school is small and promotes personal
attention, we try to do our part by maintaing contact with prospective
students.
3. In addition to phone calls, current team members write notes to
prospective students thanking them for their interest in the squad...they
basically serve as the forensics team contact person with the recruit.
4. Prospective students have also traveled with us to tournaments to get an
idea of what college forensics is like, as well as how our team acts and
interacts. Those have gone over very well too.
5. We plan to judge high school tournaments in our area as a way of
recruiting as well as giving my kids practice being on the other side of the
pen.
6. We also hosted a high school tournament as a way of getting prospective
students to our campus. Some of our current members attended our past
tournaments and said they probably wouldn't have considered our school had it
not been for the high school tournament. We don't host one anymore because
we have grown too big for our budget! But it helped at the time.
7. We have a brochure about our program that is mailed out to prospective
students. The brochure is mailed out by our admissions office. A letter
listing our scholarship is also sent to prospective students.
8. Keeping touch with students over the summer before coming to school is
really big...keeps them in touch and involved with the team, even though they
really haven't started classes yet. That's more on the retention side of new
recruits than new recruiting per se.

That's all I can think of...thanks for putting together all of this
information for everyone...that must be daunting task!

Mission Statement: The Stanford Debate Society is a student-run program
with a sizeable endowment each year for expenses, which covers all
tournament costs, including traveling. In years past the Stanford Debate
team has had a very successful program, including clearing one of the only
all-freshman teams at the National Debate Tournament. The Stanford Debate
Team is actively working to recruit top-quality high school competitors who
wish to further their policy debate career at the NDT/CEDA level as well as
new students interested in learning policy debate.
Types of activities: The Stanford Debate Society presently travels to
parliamentary tournaments on both the east and west coast. In past years
the Stanford Debate Team has traveled to all of the major NDT tournaments.
If there is student interest in policy debate, it is likely the
student-board will vote to renew sufficient funding for a top-level
NDT/CEDA program. These negotiations are already taking place.
Scholarship Availability: Stanford University does not allow academic or
talent scholarship (except athletics) of any kind. The University,
however, awards 60% of its students financial aid and is consisently ranked
as one of the most generous private institutions in the country in terms of
financial aid. Financial aid is awarded on a need-based system.
Brief Description of School: Stanford University is located in the
foothills of the San Francisco peninsula. Enrollment in 1997 totaled
14,044, of whom 6,639 were undergraduates and 7,445 were graduate students.
Stanford is considered one of the best research institutions in the world
and is certainly one of the best undergraduate educations anywhere.
Enrollment is highly selective, but debaters have a history of doing well
during the application process. :-)

Mission statement/description of the program: Trinity University is pleased to offer a competitive program open to anyone interested in participating in intercollegiate debate. While prior high school policy debate experience is beneficial, numerous Trinity students with no previous debate background or exclusive involvement in Lincoln-Douglas debate have achieved significant and continuing success. In an effort to accommodate the needs of squad members, the debate program offers great flexibility in tournament and travel
scheduling. In recent years, our senior teams have reached the elimination rounds and won speaker awards at numerous and diverse tournaments across the country, including Baylor, James Madison, Kansas, Liberty, Navy, Nevada - Las Vegas, Emporia, North Carolina, Northwestern, Redlands, Southern California, and the National Debate Tournament. In junior varsity, at one time or another, we have won or been in the final round of every tournament we have entered. In1994, a freshman team at Trinity won the
junior varsity division of the American Debate Association National
Tournament, and in 1997, another team was in the final round and earned the top two speaker awards. The squad is looking forward to continuing success at all levels in the upcoming seasons.

Types of activities: NDT-CEDA debate

Scholarships available: Over 70% of Trinity students have some type of financial aid, whether it be need-based, merit-based, or a combination of both. Trinity recognizes scholastic achievement through a variety of academic scholarships. The first scholarship is the President's Scholarship. This award ranges from $2,000 to $5,000 and is renewable for up to four years. To be considered for a President's Scholarship at Trinity, you must have a combined SAT I score of 1300 or a combined ACT score of 29 or better. As long as your grades are consistent with scores of that caliber, your chances of receiving a scholarship at Trinity are excellent. The National Merit/Trustee's Scholarship is awarded to National Merit Finalists who indicate Trinity as their first-choice school. This award is for $6,000 per year, over and above any money awarded through the National Merit program. Finally, Trinity's most competitive award is the Murchison Scholarship.
Around 20 Murchison Scholarships are awarded each year at $10,000 per year. Typically, Murchison Scholars have test scores in the mid- to upper 1400s on the SAT I or above a 32 on the ACT and a median GPA near 4.0. All scholarships are renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains at least a 3.25 GPA.

Brief description of the school: Trinity University is a relatively small, private, liberal arts and sciences institution (plus professional programs including engineering science, business administration, education, and communication) located in San Antonio, Texas. We currently enroll approximately 2500 students, about 2300 of whom are undergraduates. Our mission is simple: We provide superior educational and research
opportunities in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences to a highly select and diverse group of motivated and well- rounded students. Not only do you get one of the best available educational opportunities in your field, but you also gain knowledge of a wide variety of subjects outside of your major. Our campus and physical facilities serve an important role in maintaining our mission. Cited as one of Texas' most interesting architectural sites, Trinity's campus, with its lush greenery and winding paths, provides one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation. Despite the residential setting of its 117
acres, Trinity is only five minutes away from the historic downtown of San Antonio, the tenth largest city in the United States. Few other schools in the country offer the kinds of opportunities to undergraduates routinely found at Trinity. With a student-faculty ratio of 10.5 to1, an average class size of 20, and an endowment of approximately $540 million, Trinity offers you the individual attention you expect from smaller schools coupled with
the resources typical of a much larger institution.

Mission Statement/Description of the program

The William Pitt Debating Union is a student organization involved in a
wide range of debating activities, including two-person intercollegiate
policy debate, international parliamentary debate, and various forms of
public debate. One of the oldest organizations of its kind in the nation,
the Union is directly affiliated with the Department of Communication at
the University of Pittsburgh.

The bedrock philosophy of the William Pitt Debating Union is that argument
can educate as well as emancipate. By providing for students a forum to
sharpen their critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of
contemporary political issues, and hone their abilities as actors in the
public realm, the Union actualizes its educational mission. By spurring
robust, inclusive debate and discussion in the public community, the Union
performs its politically emancipatory function, serving as a catalyst for
reasoned public dialogue on key issues facing society. Much of the
Union's energy in pursuing these tasks comes from a team culture which
places a premium on group solidarity and cooperation. Such cooperation is
vital to cultivation of a pedagogically rich learning environment,
competitive success in intercollegiate contests, and to political
mobilization in defense of open public argument. In their activities,
members of the Union are expected not only to contribute in a dynamic and
cooperative way to these goals, but to consistently meet the highest
standards of integrity in research, teamwork and advocacy.

Scholarship Availability and terms (both debate and general school
scholarships)

Substantial debate scholarships are available to students who qualify for
merit-based scholarships through the general financial aid process.

Brief description of the school

The University of Pittsburgh is a world-class, mid-sized (12,900
undergraduates) educational institution. Located in the heart of Oakland
(the cultural center of the city of Pittsburgh), the University offers the
excitement and energy of an urban campus, while still maintaining its
charm and coziness with generous stretches of green space and foliage.
PittsburghUs academic departments have been nationally recognized for
their excellence. For example, the philosophy and history and philosophy
of science departments were ranked in the top five in two recent national
studies. The academic performance of Pittsburgh debaters has consistently
reflected the University's overall commitment to excellence. Debaters
often go on to attend top-notch graduate and professional schools
following completion of their undergraduate degrees. For example, debater
David Frederick was the University's first-ever Rhodes scholar in 1972.

University of Vermont
A Campus Tradition Since 1899

Many students assume that if they merely get a college degree it will be
their ticket to success. Many other students assume that a high G.P.A. will
be their ticket to success.
WRONG!
The real key to success in graduate school, in the professions, in the
business world, in public service, and in your personal life is to have
abilities and to use them properly. Every project and every task you face
will require you to analyze problems, spell out logical alternatives, select
the proper alternative, and then persuade others of the correctness of your
ideas through clear and organized communication.
This is where DEBATE comes in. It teaches you to be an informed advocate of
ideas and of yourself.
The Lawrence Debate Union (LDU) is for those students who want to improve
their mental abilities and their communication talents. If you are
understimulated by your college education, and you want to be MORE than you
are now and you want to be able to do MORE than you can now, consider
debating.
The LDU exists to educate, compete, and serve.
Here is what you should do if you want to find out more.
1. Give us information about you: name, address, phone number, and academic
schedule.
2. Attend our weekly meetings, Monday 6 PM.
3. Meet one on one with a coach and talk about debating. Ask questions. Call
us at 656*0097, 656*4275, or 862*2843.
4. Read through the information inside.
5. Attend a scheduled instructional session.
6. Watch a debate.

Then you can decide for yourself whether debate is right for you. Each
student can decide on his/her level of commitment to debate, and additional
commitment means additional opportunities.

BRIEF HISTORY OF DEBATE AT UVM:

Intercollegiate debate at the University of Vermont began in 1899 when Edwin
W. Lawrence '01 started the University of Vermont debate team. Throughout the
early part of this century debate was a constant part of life at UVM. After
the Second World War, a cohesive national level of debate competition began to
take shape, and Vermont was an important force. Dr. Robert Huber came to UVM
in the late 1940's, and throughout the 1950's and 1960's he led the Vermont
debate team to national dominance, including national titles at all levels.
During this time, Edwin W. Lawrence gave generously to the University to
establish an endowment for the debate team and a professorial chair to teach
forensics and work with the team ** which became the Lawrence Debate Union.
The 1980's replaced the doldrums of the 1970's with a revitalized and
successful debate team stressing education, competition, and service. The
debate history of the 1990's will be created by the students of today.

ORGANIZATION OF THE LDU:

The LDU is an endowed, co-curricular program at the University of Vermont. It
is directed by the Lawrence Professor of Forensics and coaches hired by the
University.
Members of the LDU are UVM students enrolled in at least six hours of
undergraduate study per semester and who are working toward a Bachelor's
degree. Members are expected to attend meetings, participate meaningfully in
one of the three LDU areas of emphasis, provide information to the coaching
staff about academic schedules and standing, and follow through on voluntary
verbal commitments. Nobody is required to volunteer to do anything, but
volunteers are expected to follow through on their commitments.
The coaching staff is composed of debate experts who teach debate, explore
issues, and coach students to win in competition and in life. They are
overworked and underpaid. Be nice to them.
The primary budget for the LDU is the income generated each year by the
Lawrence Fund to Encourage and Develop Debating. It is our generous bequest
from Mr. Lawrence, and as such, the LDU is responsible for the highest
standards of good stewardship. It may or may not be completely spent in any
given year, and unspent funds are rolled forward to the next year.
The LDU is also sponsored by the Student Association. A small sum of money
each year is used to promote on*campus debates to educate and entertain the
University community. For these purposes, the LDU elects a student as S.A.
Coordinator each year, and these funds are spent as directed by the S.A.

THE THREE LDU AREAS OF EMPHASIS:

The LDU sponsors activities around our major concerns: service, education,
and competition.

SERVICE:

While not the primary emphasis of the LDU, service to the University, the
community, and the state are important. These efforts include the following:
*Promote public debates on campus between opposing advocates from the
community, other colleges, and UVM.
*Present debates on important subjects to the community through staged events
and videotaped debates played on public access television.
*Sponsor students to work with local high school debate programs.
*Work in educational activities for high school students, such as the Fall
debate workshop, the State Championship Tournament, the annual debate research
handbook, and the National Debate Institute held for a month each summer.
*Outline and fulfill a year-long project for community action. In previous
years projects included African famine relief and University divestment from
South Africa. Requires near unanimous endorsement by LDU members.
*Work in alumni relations and help in LDU fundraising.

EDUCATION:

The major focus of the LDU is to teach students how to debate. Students
learn to debate by debating. The coaches develop a lecture/discussion series
which teaches debate fundamentals. Students give practice debate speeches and
then move into practice debates. Students debate as two*person teams. Before
these practice sessions become substantive, students need to learn about the
issues being debated, partially through library research and partially through
discussion, review of arguments prepared by others, and briefing sessions.
Students need to take initiative in signing up for practice sessions. If you
can't make a practice session, inform the coach involved immediately and
follow his/her instructions.

COMPETITION:

After students learn the basics of debate, they exercise their abilities
against other colleges and universities in competition. Students find a
debate partner, prepare to represent the University in competition, and then
are offered opportunities to travel to often exotic places and debate other
schools.
The coaches will observe teams preparing for competition and then offer some
of them travel opportunities. Students can decline travel opportunities if
they wish. Once committed to a specific trip, last minute changes should not
be made.
Travel decisions will be made by the coaches based on the following criteria:
*Instruction in debate basics received and internalized.
*Practice speeches and debates participated in.
*Familiarity with major issues and arguments.
*Original analytical and research work on issues and arguments.
*Ability to win.
Travel with the LDU can be a fun experience. Basic travel procedures are as
follows:
*Housing is supplied but it is rarely luxurious.
*$10 per day meal money is allocated to debaters and coaches while on the
road. A travel day that starts after noon is not a meal money day. Meal
money is not expected to pay your entire meal costs, but acts to supplement
the extra money you will be spending because you are on the road.
*Seat belts at all times when vehicles are moving. No intoxicated drivers.
Pack light for air travel. Be at the LDU office 30 min. before departure
time.
*If you leave the main party during a trip, you are on your own and the LDU
is not responsible for you. Stick with the main party until you get home.
*You are responsible for all missed school work, but the LDU can provide
letters of explanation to faculty which you should use before you miss a
class.
While at the tournament, basic procedures are as follows:
*The LDU expects you to do your best. We want to win! You have a serious
responsibility to represent UVM and the LDU. Each debate is important.
*Many debaters dress up to debate. The LDU has no set dress code, but you
are encouraged not to"dress down"to debate.
*In competitive debate, people win and lose. Be a gracious winner and a good
loser. Learn from it. Show respect for your opponent and your judge. Learn
from them so that you will win next time.
*Take the issues you are debating seriously.
*Show support and assistance for other LDU people on the trip.
*Listen to your coaches! Write down their advice before each debate. It is a
cooperative debater*coach effort to win. However, you do not have to take the
advice of the coaches.
*If LDU/UVM teams should meet in elimination rounds, no debate will take
place and the higher ranking team will advance. If this happens to the same
teams twice in one season, the non*advancing team will advance the second
time.
A strong competitive showing necessitates excellent research and analysis of
the topic being debated. All research done by LDU students and staff should
be shared with all of the LDU. This is why we have free copying. The copying
load should be shared by all. Do not trade evidence with another school
without prior approval of a coach and the person who did the research. Know
what is in the evidence system. Try to avoid borrowing evidence and arguments
from other LDU teams. If it is in the system, you should have it. You are
responsible for keeping your files organized.

COMMUNITY:

The fourth, or"unspoken"LDU emphasis is COMMUNITY. We desire to work
together productively as a supportive and healthy academic community. By
struggling together we can achieve that sense of community.

LDU OFFICES AND FACILITIES:

LDU offices are for LDU members to use. They are places of work and
discussion. After a period of time keys will be given to members on the basis
of their need for them and key availability. The LDU offices contain a
photocopy machine, computers, paper*cutter, and phones. Treat all of our
machines with love and respect as they are important and expensive. Copying
is for debate*related purposes. LDU members should keep copying for personal
academic purposes to below a ten page limit. Debate work takes priority over
other work on LDU machines. However, the office is a perfect place to study
in, read in, or work on papers in. Please feel free to use it. Besides
copying, the LDU often provides folders, index cards, tape, briefing paper,
ditto masters, and used luggage is available...all for debate purposes.
Copies can be made at the library and charged to the LDU budget for research
assignments authorized by the team.
Basic behavioral guidelines for the LDU offices include: clean up after
yourself, no sleeping, no pets, close windows when you leave (paper blows
around and pigeons enter), if you leave a task half*done put it on a shelf out
of the way, moderate phone use, respect the property of others.
LDU backfiles belong to the LDU. They are to be used for debate. For other
academic purposes (papers, etc.), they may be used for ideas and citations,
but direct use would constitute plagiarism. If you remove something, copy the
pages you need and return the originals. No guarantee can be made about

MEETINGS:

The LDU will have one business meeting each full week of school until the
competitive season is over. The weekly meeting needs to be short. Please be
prepared to schedule events and do business. Debaters are encouraged to offer
agenda items. An attempt will be made to use consensus decision*making.
Ultimately, however, the Director calls the shots.

BANQUET:

Edwin Lawrence wanted a banquet to be held at the end of each debate season
to celebrate the forensic experience. He wanted it to be free of charge for
the students and the staff. Every April we invite a few honored guests and
all LDU parents to join us for a good time. A booklet about the year is

prepared, seniors say goodbye, there is a minimum of oratory, and the various
prizes for debate achievement may be distributed. Many of these prizes are
accompanied by substantial cash awards. These awards are distributed based on
service to the LDU and others on the team, and achievement in representing the
LDU and UVM in analysis and performance. These awards are given out by a
committee appointed by the coaches.

CREDIT:

Debaters wishing to pursue readings and research credits connected with
debate should submit proposals and work plans to the Director during the
semester prior to registration.

Mission Statement/Description of the program

The Willamette University Forensic Society, established in 1839 as the
Philomathean Society, is the oldest in the Western United States. The
forensic team, a co-curricular program of the College of Liberal Arts, is
designed to provide opportunities for students to improve their skills in
argumentation, advocacy, and public performance.

The forensic program is designed to serve a variety of students: those
who want to make forensics a central part of their college experience and
those who want to forensics to be one aspect of a varied college
education. Both groups can find a home in the Willamette Forensic
Society.

All forensics students are expected to maintain good grades and
to make regular progress toward their degrees. Any full-time student of
the College who meets the minimum grade-point requirements is eligible to
be a member of the forensic team. The forensic society includes of some
of the university's best and students--students who maintain high grades
while being active in forensics and other extracurricular activities.
The forensic society participates in debate and individual events.
Debaters participate in parliamentary debate as sponsored by the National
Parliamentary Debate Association and individual event speakers
participate in events sponsored by the American Forensic Association.

2. i hope people will send tips for recruiting which i will compile into a =
document. these tips apply for reaching out to all kinds of students/people= .

Our recruiting efforts are largely dedicated to seeing that our forensic
students are good students. Thus we put more weight on high school
grades and SAT scores than on debate experience although the later may be
important as well.

Mission Statement/Description of the program

This program provides students the opportunity to compete in individual
events and parliamentary debate. Although we enjoy success, our goal is to
provide an environment where students can learn public speaking skills
(which include the ability to think critically, analyze and adapt to
audiences, and research, construct, and deliver sound arguments). We also
encourage individuals to learn to be disciplined, tolerant, and gracious
competitors.

Types of activities your program does

What, exactly, do you mean? We present programs at approximately 10 civic
organizations/clubs every year.
We are members of Pi Kappa Delta, NPDA, and AFA. We travel to about 10
invitationals per year and usually 2 or 3 national tournaments (PKD, NPDA,
Interstate Oratory)

Scholarship Availability and terms

Scholarships can be awarded based on talent and general assessment of
ability to do well in college. I can award scholarships that range from
$500 to $5,000 per year. Tuition, room, and board is near 8,000 per year.
I don't have an unlimited supply of dollars, but the school is really
generous and supportive of our program in this area.

High school and community college students regardless of race, gender, or
religious preference are encouraged to apply.

Brief description of the school

We are a private, primarily undergraduate college (though we offer two
graduate degrees), located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and affiliated with
the Mississippi Baptist Convention. Our students are primarily from
Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida, though we have students from
maybe (my guess) 25-30 states and 10-15 foreign countries. We are located
approximately 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico (we also have a campus right
on the Gulf--but our main campus is in Hattiesburg). Hattiesburg is a small
city of approximately 50,000 people and is referred to as the Hub City
because of our close proximity to New Orleans, Mobile, and Jackson.
Hattiesburg has been rated as one of the most livable small cities in the
U.S. and is a great place to live. WCC has approximately 1100 students on
the Hattiesburg campus.

Mission Statement/Description of the program:
Mission Statement
The debate squad at William Jewell College will strive to provide the best
educational, competitive, and intellectual experience possible to all
students of the campus. This experience will be based on participation at
tournaments and in the campus preparation for those tournaments involving
education in debate practices and theory along with individual coaching. An
emphasis on the skills of critical thinking, independent analysis and
personal advocacy will be stressed. The goal is to train persons not only
to be competitively successful nationally, but are prepared to use their
skills after graduation to be effective in their careers and in the society
of which they are a part.
Background:
Intercollegiate debate at William Jewell College is a long standing
tradition. We compete in intercollegiate tournaments against schools from
all across the country in a team debate format. We travel both regionally
and nationally for tournaments. We are in an advantageous geographic
location to take advantage of some of the finest national competition
available with just a short trip to nearby campuses. Jewell debate is a
member of both the NDT and CEDA organizations. Our squad is made up of
students from across a wide variety of majors. Many of our students are
interested in law and other post graduate education.
Program Philosophy:
The Jewell debate squad emphasizes personal choice and responsibility. We
feel that the students can make the best choices for what debate should mean
to them. This allows students to prioritize their academics by knowing that
they do not have to attend every single competition every semester to be a
contributing and important part of the team. Opportunities also exist to
have a full schedule of debate, and the coaching and guidance needed to get
a strong educational dimension as well as competitive success. We allow
students to select their own partners, decide what tournaments they are
attending, and deliberate as a squad as to what the research and preparation
focus should be. The rewards and benefits to students are earned by their
effort towards preparation and intra-squad cooperation, not a star system or
coaches pet arrangement.

Types of activities your program does (CEDA-NDT, Parliamentary, IE's,
Other):
Jewell offers team policy debate. We pay dues to CEDA and the NDT.

Scholarship Availability and terms (both debate and general school
scholarships):
Almost all debaters receive scholarships.

Scholarships are available for participation on the debate team. The squad
award policy is to distribute as much money as we are allowed to allocate
from our pool of funds to each student expressing a desire to be on the
team. The College establishes a formula based on need, academic
achievement, and test scores and establishes a total amount of eligibility
for each student. The College then creates an award package for the
student. This means that the student could receive the maximum amount of
scholarship aid available solely based on academics. If there is a gap
between what a student is eligible for and what they are awarded, a debate
scholarship can be granted to fulfill the students total award. In most
cases the debate scholarships can range from $1000-$1500. There are also
work study jobs available through debate to earn extra money throughout the
year available to all students who qualify. It is our desire to reward
participation on the team to the maximum level the College will allow us,
not to differentiate award amounts based on judgments of talent. Contact us
to find out more, including a scholarship application form and the level of
package that we can arrange for you.

Brief description of the school:
Type of College: William Jewell College is a private liberal arts college.
It focuses exclusively on undergraduate education and offers a variety of
majors, all emphasizing the benefits of a liberal arts focused program.
Enrollment is selective, and student body size is small to accommodate a
high student to faculty ratio.
Location: WJC is located in Liberty, MO which is just twenty minutes from
downtown Kansas City. Liberty itself is a town of about 20,000 residents
with it's own unique character and charm offering the benefits of a major
metropolitan area without the hassles. It is a picturesque campus located
on the highest point in Clay County with historic and attractive buildings
making up the"quad"of central campus. Scenic vistas abound along with a
view of the KC skyline.
Brief History: WJC was founded in 1849, and is recognized as one of the
oldest colleges west of the Mississippi river. It has a historic
relationship with the Missouri Baptist faith. Jewell Hall is listed on the
National register of historic places, and was used as both a hospital and a
stable during the Civil War.
Is Jewell For You?: The best way to find out is to make a campus visit and
see for yourself. If you are looking for a personal approach to your
higher education in a setting where you are taught exclusively by professors
and not graduate students or teaching assistants then Jewell is for you.
Students are treated like humans, not ID numbers, and faculty take pride in
the quality of teaching they bring to the classroom and the attention the
give to students outside of class as well.
