DOWNLOADED FROM DEBATE CENTRAL -- UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT FORENSIC OPPORTUNITIES IN HIGHER EDUCATION: The University of Utah Debate and Forensics Squad is housed in the Department of Communication, and is coached by a staff consisting of one faculty member and three graduate students. The squad is supported financially by the University of Utah, the Department of Communication, Associated Students of the University of Utah, and alumni donations. The Utah Debate and Forensics Squad is nationally competitive in both debate and individual events, and has achieved success at both the regional and national levels for many years. Utah has been represented at the National Debate Tournament every consecutive year since 1975, and competed in the first National Debate Tournament in 1947. We take great pride in the competitive success of our squad, and are committed to the proposition that intercollegiate debate and forensics competition is primarily an educational tool, one that we believe creates good citizens who are able to think critically about the world around them. Hence, the focus of our program is to provide a competitive forum for students who are willing to engage thoughtfully in critical dialogue over issues of national and international importance. The University of Utah provides tuition waivers for a limited number of students for participation in debate and forensics. In order to qualify for these scholarships, you must be a Utah resident, and you must complete and return the Application for Departmental Scholarships by the deadline set by the Financial Aids and Scholarship office (usually February 1).
