PHONE: 803-777-6663 E-MAIL: Berube@hsscls.hssc.scarolina.edu This posting has been approved by the Provost's Office and the Admissions Office at USC. The Carolina Debate program has played a significant role in the academic mission of the University for nearly a century. We offer team debate intercollegiate competition (in CEDA) on both a regional and national level to qualified participants. We do not currently debate in NDT or offer individual events. Carolina Debate as a university student organization has elected officers who advise the Director. The program's budget covers all tournament related expenses. We have an office space with computer support in the Carolina Plaza for debating students, a special research facility housed within the University's Cooper Library, a copy machine for all research and brief copying needs, and a graduate assistant. We have a small scholarship budget which enables us to convert some out-of-state students into non-resident scholars (1994-1995 semester tuition for non-resident scholars was $1,989 while non-residents who are not on scholarship paid $4,037). This means the award reduces tuition from $8,000 to $3,500 per year. We can and have offered outstanding students undergraduate assistantships to help reduce financial burdens. We also have an operating budget which enables us to provide students with a scholarship for participation. Debaters are expected to register for a course in Argumentation and Debate during their first semester of attendance. Debaters register for a Debating Laboratory class during every semester of attendance and receive 1 credit per semester. The budget for the program comes from both the University administration and Student Government. During the next four (4) years, we are expecting a budget of $40,000.00 each year. The budget is created from multiple sources and administered through our Provost's office and our Department. Dr. Berube's philosophy of coaching and debating is premised on the tenet that debate is a learning activity and a means to learning a methodology which may assist the student in his/her academic pursuits. Students' academic progress is scrutinized and debating students may be asked to sit out for academic reasons. The program is open and any university student may try out, but participation is a privilege not a right. Finally, debating students are expected to act as distinguished representatives of the university, and their behavior can not be reproachable. Dr. Berube also encourages a broad based program (in 1994-95, he is traveling 6 teams) and this team is composed of 6 men and 8 women with two African-Americans (two students are not traveling in the Spring in order to work on their academic programs). The University of South Carolina is a major research institution of higher learning. It offers 79 undergraduate majors. There are 18 colleges and schools that offer undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees including law and medicine. It is proud of the diversity of its student body and its curriculum. Please consider applying for admission into our Honors College. Admissions would be pleased to send you special information about this opportunity. You may also be interested in applying to live in our new Residential College program. Though Dr. Berube is not an admissions officer, he will do his best to answer all your questions and help you discover answers to any questions you may have about the program and the University.
