Bill Harlow Angelo State University Debate San Angelo, TX -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANGELO STATE UNIVERSITY DEBATING RAMS Thank you for taking the time to consider Angelo State University for your college debating experience. We have an outstanding program, and look forward to seeing you at ASU! THE SCHOOL Angelo State is located in San Angelo, Texas. San Angelo is a beautiful city of 85,000 located in west-central Texas. We have many opportunities for recreation that include: a river, three lakes, easy access to the Mexican border, and a wide range of campus sponsored activities. ASU has an enrollment of slightly over 6,000. As a state supported institution, ASU has been able to keep tuition costs very low. Additionally, there is a large scholarship base that provides assistance to many of the students. For more information on the school, you are encouraged to visit our WWW site. The location is http://www.angelo.edu THE DEBATE TEAM Goals- The ASU Debate Team exists to benefit our students by competing in debate on a national level. We believe that the many benefits of our activity can be best enjoyed by active participation in a competitive setting. At the time, we participate exclusively in CEDA. Travel- We will usually travel to 10-15 tournaments a year, with the focus being on the spring semester. All members who actively participate in the team and complete assignments on time are encouraged to travel. The 1995-96 schedule includes plans to travel to tournaments at: Air Force, Sam Houston, San Antonio College (TIFA), Central Oklahoma, Arizona State, William Jewell, Kansas State, Great Salt Lake- U of Utah, UMKC, University of Kansas, regionals in Louisiana, and nationals at Long Beach State. Scholarships- Each spring we award several debate scholarships worth a few hundred dollars each. Additionally, there are waivers available for out of state tuition expenses. Best of all, ASU has a huge base of academic scholarships. Many of our debaters participate in these scolarship programs. Direction- The Director of Forensics, Dr. Jim Sahlman, directs all aspects of the team. Participation is actively sought from all students on the team, but Dr. Sahlman has final authority to make all decisions. Dr. Sahlman is assisted with team administration by a Team President and a Team Captain. The President is responsible for recruiting, scheduling, team morale, and other functions. The Team Captain is responsible for overseeing assignments and for helping develop the arguments that will be used at the tournaments. Both officers assist each other in helping the team achieve success. For 1995-96 the President is Bill Harlow and the Captain is Chad Edwards. More Information- We hope you will join us at ASU, and we look forward to hearing from you. Please contact us if you have any questions. Happy Debating! Jim Sahlman, Director of Forensics P.O.
